how would i load a map with no .map file into QtkRadiant? for instance MLB_temple.pk3 there is no .map file how would i open that file to view the map?
decompiling .bsp's "meaningful thread title"
First you should learn how to create a .pk3 out of a .map file. And when you can do this, it is an easy step to decompile maps of other people.
lol, most pk3’s DO NOT have .map files b/c to run the map in the game you do not need a .map, you need a .bsp. the .map is coverted to a .bsp which teh game uses. the /map is used by the elvel editor… so no one includes it b/c its not needed, and takes up space. you can decompile .bsp’s to make them .maps, but then u have to fix them up, and worry about copyrights and ppl getting mad. So your better off to e-mail the map maker and ask them for it…
It’s interesting that you mentioned gaining access to the Temple .map file
Let me help you here:

Read it and then consider what you want to do
Errr… I don’t think Warlord is going to be doing any mapping based off of another person’s map - It all stemmed from a discussion we had over TeamSpeak about the secret room in MLB Temple, and in other MLB maps. It’s easy enough to /noclip around and find the secret rooms, but finding the triggers to access it normally are not quite as easy… And it looks like Warlord is becoming obsessed with secret rooms in general, he’s gone so far as installing one in his laundry room - it even has switches to control laundy spawn times.
On a side note, he has contacted Marko, and is awaiting a reply
lmao jet very true… but i have also wanted to make a map of my own… but i cant learn by reading and taking the damn time to figure shit out i would rather see how someone else did the map and how they set things i have no intention of copying Temple or anyother map… and put my name on it when theres how many players out there who plays these maps everyday and would know i was a fake…
In the making of the original Wolfenstein 3D, Romero begged Carmack to include secret rooms in the game engine.
Carmack refused initially because this game had to be fast and secret room-code would slow down the flow of the engine.
Marko’s secret rooms are brilliant, eg the way one can punch in codes and teleport to the rooms.
My best effort yet is a secret room in “berserk”. Near a ramp, indoors. But it is very simple, you just shoot/nade the wall to get in.

Talking about permission to modify a map: what if you mail someone and never get an e-mail back?
I wanted to change et_headshot for an improved version for our clan. (like adding a score system, making it so that the pit ‘clears’ itself by using a target_kill etc)
Now I’ve sent 2 e-mails, 1 to RivrStyx who did the et conversion, and 1 to Gerbil, creator of the LOTR maps and here the creator of mml_headshot for RTCW. No reply. How can you then ever fix this map when you even won’t get a reply?
Or this just because both Gerbil and RivrStyx are on holidays?
So how long could you wait for it…
You might not want to spend time on learning and “figuring shit out”, but maybe you can
start with spending more time on meaningful thread titles :bored:

it is a basic setup of a teleport trigger setstated by the scripting commands of a globalaccum used with increments. They moved the scripting all over the script file to foil any noob’s try at deciphering the code.
As a new mapper myself, I’d have to say that if you can’t take the damn time to read and figure shit out…you are in a heap o’ trouble. Learning to map pretty much requires copious amounts of those two things: reading and figuring shit out. (Imho)
true, i spent lots of time just making little rooms (with no detials) and hallways and layouts of places till i learned all the tools in the editor. Then i went from there. I didnt look at anyones stuff, mostly figured stuff out on my own.
…and without doing any reading it would be hard to receive much benefit from any answers here as they would be in written form. (just like the manuals)
(yes, I am a smartass)
And I dont know about anyone else, but looking at the pro’s work sometimes just confuses me more. I know it won’t once I’ve been mapping a few years (decades), but some of the stuff in goldrush just blows my mind…
[yoda]What you find confusing now will soon no longer be of any consequence as the world of mapping, you will sustain, information…you will have.
Many journeys have started along this road we all know and not many choose to stay on the tar. Go ahead look back at all the faces, in your REAR-view mirror, that decided to stop mapping because of it’s difficulty. You have atleast come this far and this far you shall always have.[/yoda]
- Can I stop being a tool now ? …lol
welp i’ve done what i wanted to do in the first place… so thxs… for all the comments… even know its kinda funny how you guys help people out…
lol EB…dont do it! If you stop being a tool, Ill have to stop bein a smartass…
