DB out Doom'd Doom

(Sir_Slam) #1

So as many of you are aware, the doom beta hit.

And let me tell ya. It’s horrid. It’s bad. Like. Really bad.
“But assmonkey, why is it so bad and why is DB better?”

Well let me tell you oh sweet patron of mine.

Because it does absolutely nothing different. It has no leg to stand on. It’s like the worst elements of HALO with a COD TTK. It’s floaty. None of the guns have weight to them. The movement doesn’t feel right, not realistic or truly arena. Two weapon system and loadouts (why!?).
They tried to shill out to console peasents and ended up making something I don’t think would please anyone. It’s sad. It’s really sad.

Oh and day one DLC and season pass. Hell Bethesda, taking a page from EA I see?

So. The multiplayer is out, not going to bother with it. I would make comment on balance but it’s a beta, that usually just comes with time. But what really saddens me is what they had to work with. They had the biggest community an FPS has ever seen, and this is what they did with if. Day 1 DLC my ass.

I didn’t even bother to actually play Doom after I realized I couldn’t do anything about the bloody mouse acceleration.

I mean, you could call the aimee obsidian vengeance thing a day 1 DLC aswell.
But yeah, I heard this game was pretty horrible.
Adding on to that list, there’s also apparently no airstrafes, no rocket jumps, and railguns instant kill on head shot.

Didn’t bother too look too much into it but I didn’t find anything about what the future DLC will be, leaving me a little bit confused even tho I’m not really big fan of Season Passes in general (unless it’s older game which I really happen to like, all the DLC has been released and I wouldn’t mind buying dem all).
However, I’m completely confused when it comes to the hatred of all day one DLC since more often than not the day one DLC is cosmetics (of course, every once in a while some douche tries to sell parts of the game as DLC on release)

Why the hell did they ship it with motion blur turned on to high by default anyways? Apparently you can’t turn down the graphical settings too. However I’d love to see a customization system like Doom’s in Dirty Bomb, if only that wouldn’t invalidate the whole point of loadout skins. I just like the idea of running around with guns that look like toys

It’s probably locked to ‘high’ so people who look at all the screenshots or videos won’t go “omg the graphics are shit” even tho person who took teh screenshot/ recorded the video had set graphics to ‘low’.
Gotta get people to pre-order the game before people get to actually play the game ya know.
(yeah yeah they got the beta but everything you see in beta might as well be a lie… … even tho what I’ve seen, it probably would be better if it was all lies)

This is why most AAA multiplayer games are dead to me.
They are all giving you all sorts of powerups/killstreaks/assists just to earn kills the cheapest way possible.

I think it has a bit of an identity crisis, but overall I actually quite enjoyed the few rounds I played. Some critics are panning it for not being as arena as they hoped, this is somewhat valid - I often found myself looking for a sprint key. I also found myself spending a huge amount of time midair and being annoyed by the lack of airstrafing. Everything in the game feels like it’s in slow motion as you mention, coming back down to earth seems to take ages. Hell, even falling into a pit seems to take ages. The environments are really weird perspective wise, they feel like they were built for giants. I guess this is to accomodate the demons but it further adds to the sluggish feeling of the game.

I don’t think it’s fair to write it off because “doom never had great multiplayer” as some have said, that’s bollocks, they’ve got an opportunity to make it awesome here. Doom 3 had a great MP scene as well, often forgotten. I think what it needs is a bit of tweaking/modding at launch for the arena fans, as long as it supports that, groovy. This video is quite interesting, shows some hidden commands that make the movement a lot more attractive:

Also fuck those taunts. Really cringy, and you get subjected to that crap every time you finish a round. That novelty wears off real fast.

DB feels much more in tune with the legacy it carries. DOOM (4)'s MP has the superficial elements down, but I think they need to dig a bit deeper to really connect with the arena generation they said they were trying to reach. I just hope they don’t totally mess up clan arena, but I fear they already have. While it is fun I highly doubt this MP experience will last any more than a year or two, and I certainly wouldn’t invest in it for that alone.

What a shame… I really wanted this to be good but alas
