I just checked out the game with the steam free weekend. Everything would be fine… but as i start a mission, i got some kind of transparent map overlay appears on the screen which I never required or asked for.
I have a Win XP x64, ATI R5770 with latest drivers etc. I set the refresh rate to 85 with an autoexec.cfg.
There is no FPS problem or performance isssue with the ATI card btw. Maybe because my OS doesnt eat it like crappy Vista and Win7 setups.
Never seen that before…
What was when you had these settings?
r_swapInterval 1 //vsync on
r_displayRefresh 0
Guess you know already but just in case, you get the console with ctrl+alt+^ (or whatever key is below your escape key:))
and these make it easier accessable so you can live test:

seta com_allowConsole 1
seta con_speed 0

Ive tried that, but it was still appearing. Occasionally after restarting the game, the backdrop pattern has changed and sometimes it even appeared in the main menu.
After some experimenting Ive found out that the ambient occlusion option was causing it, so I turned it off and it’s working fine now.
