It took a minute but I now see how the merge/split patch functions work. I am still having problems acheiving what I want with the tunnel. Here is a shot from radiant of what I am trying to achieve.

Hope that image is posted correctly. As you can see I am trying to have a clean intersection of the dark colored tunnel into the larger, lighter colored tunnel. Is this possible to achieve by manipulating the verticies? I have tried splitting the large tunnel and and manipulating verts on the side where the dark tunnel will intersect but I cannot get it to come out right. There are always parts that do not match up. If this is possible can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.
