Customize UI

(Kyodan) #1

As much as I’m enjoying Brink, I think there maybe too much going on in the UI. It’s making it very hard to focus at times, and forcing me to play off the UI rather than my intuition and skill.

I’ve been combing through the game commands hoping to turn as much as I can off, but sadly there are some elements that can’t be removed and/or modified, mainly:

  • player outlines
  • player names
  • class icons
  • crosshairs

Just like the Deus Ex developers have done, would the developers consider making these UI elements optional? Especially the outlines of friendly targets, they’re a bit jarring and distracting.

With player names/class icons, the preferable way would be to have them appear when your crosshairs are aimed at them, or within a certain distance.

I would play with g_showhud 0 at all times (which I have ended up binding to a key), but I would like some information on the screen. More options are always welcomed!

i sign this.

dont have my copy yet, so i didnt even had a chance to try things for myself.

some clearification on this would be nice. an implementation of a more costumizable hud would be even better.

i watched a live stream today for several hours and most of the time the hud was “ok”. at some points though the outlines of objectives at larger distance scaled too big and interfered with the environment and players that were between you and the objective. you couldnt see much except the big outlines.

same things with medics. when some people die at one spot and you are far away from them, the revive icons “group” to a bigger “bubble thing” which is also very confusing.

Same, dont have a copy yet.
But having seen quite a few pc videos in the last day, I can safely say that an option to disable the spread indicator would be rather nice. Im hoping that the option is already in the game, and doesnt need to be patched in.

is there anyway you can take a screenshot of how yours looks atm so i can get an idea of what you mean.

I heard Splash Damage boasting about bring fully customizable control schemes to console FPS, something PC FPSs have have to 10years.

I really hope they allow removing HUD, and friendly/enemy (Blue/Red) highlighting as well.

A customizable HUD would really be nice. I truely believe that SD will listen to the community and give us these features. Right now they might be a bit occupied with getting the release done properly (Europe and ROW). So I imagine they will start with community support as soon as they can.

completely customizable huds would be a neat addition.

one addition. yesterday, when i saw the streams, in a few games there was a guy with a ridiculously long name that blocked a big part of the screen.

so, max lenght of player nicks above heads needs some adjustment, too, i guess.

I just hope they make it possible to change the crosshair, I just want a damn dot

THIS. Had a group of people doing this the other day and it was mega-disruptive with those huge names.

I’m waiting for some HUD options too, like being able to fade some parts and get others smaller, things like that. I really hope we will have that, even if we have to do it through CFG files.

Here’s a quick mockup I did in Photoshop of a UI idea of mine (sorry for the large pic):

I’m going for a clean, minimalist look that doesn’t sacrifice on info. I know a few elements are missing, I’m still working on how to include them into my idea.

Looks like we’re not the only ones, the outlines are definitely too distracting.

(PillowTalk) #16

Names that are always above the head, even through solid objects, annoy me as well. Mostly because sometimes I will glance over and think I see a friendly, but I am actually looking at an enemy in front of a team mate who’s on the other side of a wall and just assume it’s a team mate.

(Kyodan) #17

Bump, I think we can all agree that more options are welcomed.

(dsi1) #18

Oh my god this, also UI can block enemies in general, nothing worse than fighting blind because a downed teammate and an objective marker are in the way of an enemy.

(Kyodan) #19

Another mock-up. This definitely has me wishing they allow us to customize our UI:

The extremely bold fonts and outlines are my biggest issue with the game.
UI scaling or font adjustment is direly needed.
