Customizable weapons don’t appeal to me for a game like this. I love the purity of a class-based fps where there is no customization aside from what class/character you choose. You can spot a character by the skin, and know what their weapon is best suited for, and what tools they have at their disposal. If they can, I’d prefer that Splash Damage focuses their profit model on selling a variety of characters.
Customizable weapons - any future plans?

People will start complaining about how many classes/weapons/items there are most likely. Competition will probably want to exclude half of them from their matches. Release too many and it will become a FPS-MOBA
Actually this. In a dream-world, I would prefer if there actually was no way to customize your merc’s gameplay mechanics, only visuals. And that there would be just so many different mercs that you didn’t actually feel the need to customize how they play. So that every class would have at the very least 5 unique mercs.
But this might be just pure wish talk
Of course comp would come up with their own limitations, doesn’t matter if the game is based on different loadouts or different weapons or weapon attachments. So I don’t understand where you’re going with this.
If we can go off topic a little I think something that shouldn’t be ignored is selling services.
[ul]
[li]Simply giving people access to advanced Stats could be a £10 one off purchase.
[/li][li]Instancing private (or public ones with admin) servers for short periods such as 1 day could also be another. Dropping £1 for 24hrs might suit people a lot more than paying a full monthly rate for a server that may sit idle for some time.
[/li][li]Of course, taking a cut of more traditional server rentals.
[/li][li]Advanced Clan tools such as heat maps and wider statistics about the game and (shhh) other clans. Also hosting of demo files over a certain age and maybe some advanced web tool.
[/li][li]Allowing certain customisations for personal/clan promotion.
[/li][li]And then a fleet of cosmetic customisations.
[/li][/ul]
I guess my point is that there are other means, that don’t involve over complicating the game or limiting it just to drive something like a bazillion guns to buy.

A lot of those services should not be sold lol. They should be free. I do however see clan services being a good source of income. Think custom clan gear or in-game logo/badges for X price, or selling recruitment ad space on the server browser banner for X price per month or whatever. Thinking more along those lines.
Why not? You’re getting a game for free, I don’t see why selling services that are non essential or enhancements on free services is a poor way to earn revenue or takes advantage of players. It doesn’t impact the game play at all (even cosmetic items and load outs are going to alter the game design) and just serves to provide enhancement to those people who actually see value in it. I’m not suggesting they cripple services, it’s clear they want to give competitive player a suite of tools, what I don’t think is fair is that, in this example, competitive players should get everything for free and ride off the backs of people buying cosmetic items.
