Custom maps?

(xSil3nt) #1

If you navigate to
‘Dirty Bomb\ShooterGame\CookedPC\Maps’
you can see the maps that are in the game. If you copy one of the map folders, and rename everything (The folder, and everything in the folder) to anything you want. Go in to the game and press the tilda key (`), and type in 'switchlevel [The name of your ‘map’]. It goes into the map that you copied. So, in theory, if you could make a map that is compatible, you could import the map into the game. So… when can we have custom maps. I dont think this would be that much work for SD, since all they need to do is release their map development software (the customized version of UE3). Please make this happen!

If they are making maps… They would have an SDK, right? So, it would not be that much work, I think we may see an SDK being released in the near future. I would really like to see it cause, there are very talented people in this community. It would make map development much easier for SD.

they use UDK and a custom asset base, you can make maps with UDK, several people have, but there is at this time no way to access the textures and other assets you might need to bring the map out of blockout stage

Top community request for a long time along with community servers. Community servers were more or less ruled out in a dev post before the Nexon split. Not sure if that is still the case or not.

Community content is one of the biggest things that would keep DB alive and thriving for a long term period. Most shooters get stale due to lack of content, so people have fun with them for a while, then move onto something new/different.

Just look at the Battlefield series… They keep making new ones, and people keep buying them. It isn’t that there is a ton of content in the games (aside from gun customization), but if you want any of the new content then you have to ditch the previous game and get the next one.

I own BF 3, 4 and One and honestly they just don’t hold my attention in the long term due to the game’s play style. I think I liked BF 3 the best out of the last several to come out, and it is mostly due to the game’s level design.

Overall however, I prefer DB to any other shooter out there currently… but crave the map content that it could and that it deserves to have if only it were open to the public for making community content. While everyone likes to have new weapons and mercs… having a large variety of maps to play on keeps the game interesting, and makes things like adding a new merc an exponential experience as you are now able to play that merc on X number of levels to see what kind of interesting situations can arise.

I can’t praise games like Unreal Tournament enough when it comes to community driven content, that game has to have one of the highest number of custom maps and mods in the existence of video games to this day.

b…but sdk is alot of work.

Not if the devs get their production line for new maps done and (maybe unpopular opinion?) cut some of the focus on Ranked. I really don’t care about Eagle skins, I care about actual content.

Yeah b…bbbut all that work.

An SDK is a lot of work. We do have tools that we use to make the content, but we can’t just straight up release those for a number of reasons; Usability and security to name a couple. We would love to see community tools available, but at this point we’re focusing on building our own content streams first and I’m happy to say that these are coming on fantastically! Stay tuned! Lot’s of news to come.

Timeless game and one of my favorites to this day. It is unbelievable just how many different ways there are to play UT. And you can combine parts of different mods and mutators to make bizarre mixes as well.

its only a shame SD saw it the other way around.

If SDK was the first priority since closed alpha/beta, many custom maps would likely exist by now, increasing longevity of the game from the get-go.

Having SDK when the game is already past its prime (not saying we are there yet), and few content creators are interested in expanding on the game is likely not gonna work.
