Custom Map Pitch Black *Screenshots*

(Java.Lang) #1

The Lang Community in partnership with ECGN Server Hosting is hosting a custom map test server for our current map project in development: Pitch Black.

I wanted to post about this here to let others know what is going on in some of the more underground areas of the ET realm (we don’t get out much, the cellar gets awful lonely at night).

The concept is to create a map for our (Lang) community first and foremost, to offer those who frequent our servers something tailored for them. Incorporated in this project are (hopefully) fresh gameplay elements. Generally speaking, we are attempting a ‘multiple route’ option for objectives. Specifically, this means the team on offensive has more than one way to complete their main goal.
Although this may not be new to some, we feel we are offering something new compared to the standard maps which we run loyally and religiously and will continue to do so (thanks SD!)

So on to the project in question: Pitch Black. Why the name? It’s at night, it’s dark and forboding. Theme? Trainyard (nothing new here). The darkened theme was created because it can envelope the player more, and give them more oppurtunity to imagine what is ‘out there’. Suspenseful. I like the edge-of-your-seat gameplay in horror adventures like Resident Evil, and would like but a sampling of that ‘oh crap he just came around the corner and scared the be-geezus outta me!’ feeling.

So you got a dark trainyard. You have your Axis, you have your Allies. The Allies are taking off with a early working atomic bomb (or parts of it) They can secure the objective, they can assemble it, they can steal it, as long as they end up getting it to the train on time.

Ok, there is your background. The project has been in development since the begining of fall last year. The way I have my testing going is as follows: I compile a general working version of the map, upload it on to our test server and allow our community to run around, learn before everyone else does, and help us out finding problems with it. I want this to be polished from the first release and so far all of the feedback has allowed me to tweak a lot of things.

Even still, you will find flaws. We encourage you if you are interested in running around it, to post feedback in our forums right here.

Finally the information you need:

Map File (warning this is not a playable map, run around in it, do not distribute it, this is for testing only)
Server IP: 69.31.6.177:27961
Server Password: pbtest

We appreciate any and all of you who are interested in learning more about this project and the Lang Community. We realize we are not professionals in mapping by any means, so please bear with our mess. We play the game to have fun, and enjoy mapping as a means of being creative, a benefit of which is sharing the creation with other interested people. Enjoy!

side note: all these words r belong to me

  1. You should put the map on a webserver and set sv_wwwDownload
to 1 and sv_wwwBaseURL to point at it. Having to wait 15 minutes
to download a test map (which needs a lot of work) isn’t going to
    get you many testers.

  2. You should provide a minimal maps/mapname.objdata listing
the objectives, even if they don’t work yet.

The map file IS on a webspace and the dl only takes 30 seconds or so on most broadband connections. Not sure why you didn’t use the link I gave in my above post.

As for the objectives, yeah, that’s probably a good idea, I will look into it.

OK… didn’t notice the link to the map above.

Still, it would be nice if you provided that kind of
speed to the game too so people don’t have to download
the map before heading to your server (in case you put
a new version up). Just put your map at:

http://langstas.com/etmain/lp1_1.pk3

and set sv_wwwbaseurl to “http://langstas.com/
and sv_wwwdownload to “1”.

The boat is invisible. If you stand far away from an exit you will see no rain, if you come closer the raindrops appear.

Please, let’s keep this a discussion on the project itself, send any problems with the map itself to this thread.

Here are a few screenshots of the latest version. I figured eye candy may draw a few more hapless victims.
