custom campains

(Flash95) #1

I am trying to make a campain with all six maps in one campain.
I am thinking that I have to creat a new .campaign file under the scripts directory. I understand everything except one line in the file

mapTC 374 374

what does it do and do I need to edit it?
thanks

t’would be better just to edit an existing one methinks :moo:

(Flash95) #3

thats what I did
campain shows up on server setup with all of my maps.
but when the first map loads it still said 1 of 3 not 1 of 6.

sounds kind of borgish if you ask me

Snip Snip from the documentation …

The campaign script file contains the following keys.

Name:The name to appear in the UI campaign select box.
Shortname:Used to start the campaigns from the console (campaign command)
Description:Used to describe the campaign on the host game UI
Maps:A list of maps in the campaign separated by semicolons.
mapTC:The map offset on the big map image. The current onscreen map window is only 650x650 pixels.
This allows the map pins to be more central located in the onscreen map window.
type:Only one type supported, “wolfmp

 man you are awesome!!!

I will keep poking to fix the 1 of three issue.

(Flash95) #6

ok I added the maps and they showed from the servermenu but when we played it only went through the first three then started over.

I found no referances to campains in the arena files any thoughts??

Are you running the server pure?

Have you created a new campaign file based on one of the existing files?

Yes the server is pure.
and yes I used one from the pac file as a template.
here is the code

"
{
name “Whole War”
shortname “cmpgn_wholewar”
description "This is the whole thing boys and girls! "
maps “oasis;battery;goldrush;radar;railgun;fueldump”
mapTC 374 374
type “wolfmp”
}

"

When you run a server pure it will not recognise any files outside of pk3 files. You need to put your new campaign file into a pk3 and make sure everyone has this file on their machine as well.

The new pk3 has to have the correct file structure so that the campaign file will be read correctly. All campaign files are located in “scripts” folder.

DOH :suspicious:
I knew that…
Thanks

:moo:[/quote]Hang on, let me get this straight - to create a new campaign you have to have a file downloaded to the client? That’s insane.
Whatever happened to having it all in the server config for map rotations etc like any other game I can think of?

How seamless can you make this getting of the new campaign .pk3 - is it automatic and hidden?

If it involves user effort then that’s a bit off really, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I’m sure I played a 6 map campaign and didn’t have to download anything.

So now I’m just confused :expressionless:

Each map has to have an arena file which tells the system what to display on the loading screen and how the map will work if loading as a single map (g_gametype 2)

The campaign file links all the arena files together for a campaign game. (g_gametype 4) All servers and clients need the same campaign file in order for it to work correctly and draw the campaign screen correctly.

All client have “download on” by default and the campaign files are generally 2/3k in size. Most users will not even know they have downloaded the campaign file. The server admin can setup the download system in the server scripts. All downloads can even be re-directed to a different server so that it does not affect gameplay on the server.

A 6 map campaign will require a new file stored in a pk3 file. If you have played on a 6 map campaign server check your etmain folder for any new pk3’s.

OK, so it does have to download, but it’s small and basically invisible.
That’s good enough for me - although I foresee problems since this means server seter-uppers will be choosing arbitrary pk3 names and there’s a huge potential for conflict.

Oh well though

At least it means people releasing multiple custom maps can include a pre-made campaign file to help server peeps get it up and running ASAP I suppose.

A group of mappers working together on campaign project would be good thing. Generally speaking teams of people produce better results. Plus hopefully with the new download system, server admins will be more willing to try new maps and campaigns.

Main problem with groups is that they need someone in charge - and I dunno about you but I’ve seen plenty of RTCW efforts fail because the person in charge isn’t right for the job. You can get more done, but you also have to be more disciplined and responsible - tricky when most people tend to do this for fun

Is there a limit on the number of campaigns a server can support?

I’ve written a few of my own campaigns at:

http://www.nd80usa.net/slicks/newcampaigns.html

And they all seem to work OK except the last one.
The last one contains all 120 possible three map campaigns
where no map is repeated during the campaign. When
I put it in the server’s etmain folder, the server has
problems with the “map” command (it shows an empty
mapname) and the server ends up shutting down.

I’ve tried bundling as either 120 seperate scripts or
all one script (which seems to work fine in singlemap2to10).
Both ways give the same error.

The singlemap2to10.pk3 has 54 campaigns and seems
to work fine. In all, we have 60 campaigns to choose
from at ND80USA’s. But if I include the additional 120
campaigns, the servers break.

Is there a limit or is this a bug? I won’t even bother with
all possible four map (or more) permutations if it is a limit.

Have you worked out exactly how many campaigns it can have in total?
From the numbers you’ve mentioned, I’d probably wager either 128 or 127 is the maximum possible?
