Curiosity - What other options was considered and tested?

I was just wondering what made you boys decide on the Unreal engine.

It doesn’t strike me as an obvious choice (it isn’t really known for its stability as far as I am aware).

Why didn’t you go with the likes of idTech4, Source (I know it’s pretty crap but hey… :)), made your own, etc, etc?

Just curious to hear what made you choose it compared to the ones out there.

I have no real experience actually dealing with different engines so forgive me if I sound a bit ignorant and/or harsh. Also, if this question have been answered before, sorry again.

Methinks it’s because the sheer versatility capable with the engine (just search which games run on the Unreal Engine ) and it’s seems to be becoming the industry statndard engine. I don’t think idTech could of been used since it’s now owned by ZeniMax and I don’t think they’d license it out.

Running the game on idTech4(or even 5) is just asking for trouble especially for ATI cards. OpenGL is just that badly supported.

i state that an idTech engine causes more trouble than Unreal Engine beside licence trouble, i think it is the most stable and reliable engine. For FPS first choice. Well why creating an own engine when there is already one who covers their needs for development. Additional there is enough support and material around handling bugs, techniques etc. Most productive engine nowadays i guess.

Too bad that it doesnt use UE4^^ btw is the stuff from UE3 compatible with UE4?^^ just curious

MrEd or Anti already answered to me while I asked the same question, yet I cannot find his reponse … I’ll search more later.

In substance he said that the UT engine was a natural choice since it is widely used for FPS, is suitable to make F2P games, and that it’s quite easy to find qualified people to work on it.
