Really having trouble getting this to work. Any tips?
Crouch jump
Jump up and crouch at the very peak of your jump, hold forward the whole time. Should get you onto whatever you want to get onto, if its possible.
oh my mistake then
Crouch jumping is different, Aye?
Yes, definitely is. I was just assuming the op meant long jumping. I was not aware crouch jumping was a thing in unreal engine, but what do I know, I am a idtech kinda guy, who loves his CSJ’s. But I do know that SD has repeatedly stated that they don’t want non-obvious mechanics to be part of the game, like CSJ and ramp jumps from idtech and, I assume, crouch jumping.
crouch jumping is in, it was the first alt movement added back when Chapel still had take the milk jugs from inside the Chapel
I wouldn’t consider crouch jumping to be non-obvious. They’ve been around for years in pretty much every game I’ve ever played. I’d be shocked if a game didn’t have crouch jumping.
EDIT: Long jumping is far less obvious.

Long jumping is only not obvious, because it’s never explained (it should be, as it’s meant to be easy to discover, unlike CSJ.) As for the rest, you could make the same argument about CSJ and ramps. I mean, it does not make any sense that you can reach higher locations by crouching. Just as it does not make any sense that if you sprint forward, while strafing and doing a 45 degree flip to the side with your mouse, followed by a jump, it gives you a boost (CSJ).
More interestingly, are there actually any uses for crouch jumping in any of the maps? I find that the maps are actually really good shielded with invisible walls to prevent you from going any where the developers does not intend you too. Giving you the option to reach places only by crouch jumping sort of undermines that map making effort.

But, yes, you were right, I was wrong.

Some here and there. For example you can hop onto the rock in front of Chapel with a crouch jump. Long jump tends to slam you into it. You could also jump off the side of the bus and get up there(looks cooler imo), but there are some uses.
lol I go upon the rock all the time, never used crouch jump for it. IMO crouch jumping (or rather any practical uses of it) should not be a thing. Just as the ‘look in the opposite direction, and walljump backwards’ exploit, that can get you to those same (and more difficult to reach) places. Places you are not intended to reach. But it (both) is more of a map makers headache, I guess.
Crouch jumping makes sense in a way. If you tuck in your legs as you jump you can get over things you couldn’t if you didn’t.
That is super jumping. Crouch jumping is different, Aye?
Didn’t even know there’s long jumping/super jumping in this game lol
Crouch jump:
Jump, and then press Crouch - you can jump on higher boxes
Long jump:
Sprint run, then TAP a crouch button, and almost immidiately press jump - you will jump further, with more speed. then you will get a speed penalty for like almost half a second (?)
I keep thinking about doing a video that explains the forms of jumping and where they are useful. I might have to do something like that over the weekend. Would be nice to have a video that explains the different jumps and where to use them in useful spots on each map.
I suggest you go watch PixelTwitch video on YouTube explaining movement in dirty bomb.
What I have done to make life easier (not because I couldn’t do it) is change sprint to toggle on options and you will never fail long jumps again.
I will never understand how people play this game without sprint toggle on. It feels almost unplayable without it.
