Crossbows

(TheStrangerous) #1

A while back in other thread, I suggested a crossbow for a stealth merc we all know needs reworking.

Knowing how implementing this weapon is possible, due to Dishonored, a stealth game that features crossbow, is running on the same U3 engine. Question is, how would it work?

Sparks revive gun is one of a kind, and despite it’s look, it’s actually a crossbow in disguise of a laser gun. So even if the crossbow aesthetic wouldn’t work, the very mechanic of holding down LMB and then releasing it should be considered.

Should the high-strain mechanic be available for future mercs? Or keep it exclusive to Sparks?

I think keeping the ‘high-strain mechanic’ exclusive to sparks will keep her original, and really it’d be more fitting for a bow than a crossbow particularly, except maybe as a function of ‘reloading bolts’ for the crossbow.

I like the idea of a projectile weapon that isn’t an explosive for once, but it may be difficult to balance, especially with a stealth character and the pacing of dirty bomb, because if it does too much dmg and the stealth is too strong then there would be no counter-play, if it does too little then there would be almost no use for it outside of very long distance (which some maps don’t even really allow for).

All in all I’m open to the idea but I have my reservations.

I think Sparks could still be original with a crossbow or similar weapon in the game, but I don’t know that it would go well with Phantom. In theory, it gives him a Fletcher-esque high-damage weapon that can be followed up very quickly by an SMG. You could say that he already does it with the Katana, but this would give that type of power way more range.

But about future mercs, like you mentioned, then I could see it still being unique. Slow, non-variable reload and no charge capability; minuscule audio signature; (not that it matters in this game’s audio mess) and likely being paired with an actual primary weapon, as opposed to Sparks’ machine pistols. Might also be non-hitscan like @Equanimity mentioned, probably with minimal drop (until you’re on Dome) and high speed. If it becomes a merc’s defining ability, then I could imagine it being a full-size crossbow with further nuances. Reloading reduces or negates movement speed, something else ridiculous like that.

To add more skill involved, adding an arc would balance out the arrow projectile.

Kinda like in Painkiller:

Hell, if we’re running around with katanas and cricket bats… I’m sure a crossbow can fit in!

A crossbow seems unfun to use and play against and generally doesn’t fit in an environment like Dirty Bomb.

Basically a GL with no blast radius and also being quieter.

It would be hilarious if Proxy built herself a crossbow. I can just imagine it being like one of Junkrat’s contraptions or something, or the Cobalt skins having a more advanced carbon-fiber build to them.

Fuck it.
Default-Bronze = Junkrat contraption
Urban/Silver = Plastic
Crown = Historical Artifact
Swiss = (I dunno)
Bamboo = Ghille
Cobalt = Carbon Fiber
Just have like, 2 max charges and a fairly long recharge time to balance it a bit.

If it would be an Guts-like Crossbow (from Berserk), damm that would be fun. Not the gameplay, but the people crying about it. :blush:

PS:Im more into Bows, they look better to me and there are quite a few high-tech Bows in the Gameworld like in e.g. Crysis 3 which would fit for Phantom.

@Yoma yes modern bows are very easy to use, the biggest problem with normal bows is that you can hold it too long or move, with compound bows you can get more power and you can hold it or walk, compound bow is like crossbow, really

i would like to see as weapon, maybe with magazine as quiver
like that one
