Creating soundpack,

(FiReWall.) #1

Hello everybody!

I am making a new soundpack for my server.
I know how I convert .mp3’s to .wav mono, that’s not the problem.
… but keeping the file size low is my highest priority, and this is my problem!

When I create a soundpack for my server I make sure;

  • Sounds are max 15 seconds in length.
  • Sample rate is 44100 hz
  • File is .WAV mono (single)

The program is use is WavePad
Using lower hertz is making the quality terribly bad, at least made with the program I use.

So my specific question is; what program do you professional mappers use?
What would you recommand me, and what are rate (in hertz) do you use?

Thanks in advance,

FiReWall

There’s nothing you can do apart from change the sample rate to affect file size, and unless Wavepad has a serious resampling deficiency (which I doubt), other applications will not give you noticeably better quality. Check the quality of the game sounds for reference… I wouldn’t say those at 22,050 sound “terrible” (the longer clips are 22,050 - music and chat mostly), but they certainly lack the presence and crispness of those at 44,100 rate.

I think wavepad is almost the best you can get :D:D:D:D

try Audacity

i think it’s cool and powerful and free

Audacity doesn’t work very well for lowering the quality. IIRC if you begin with lower quality it’s good, but if you lower it afterwards then it gets bad. I’ve always used windows recorder for changing the quality. Works great imho.

Just to end this, either you want good quality with higher file size. Or you get worser quality but smaller file size. Only way to say it. That or, just not have extra voices. Which to me is pointless. I don’t need to do v824 to say something like “I KICKED HIM IN THE NADS” it’s kind of a waste of my download time.

I’ve always liked Krystal Audio as an easy editor

sounds which are only spoken can be on very low settings… makes some kind of radio effect…
