Creating a Train

(ScOrPiOn_37) #1

Hey, Ive made a very nice looking subway map thats missing 1 vital ingrediant. A train, But i cant get the bleedign Script_mover to work.

I dont want it to be button activated I just want it to go past then go past again and so on and so forth, but it wont. So can anybody explain to me how I would make a train go past my station, every minute or soo And when it does go past the station play a sound of a train that I got.
It dosnt matter if the train goes back and forwards or goes round. (Round is what I had in mind)
But I cant get it to work for the life of me, so anybody who is able to help me. Ill be much apreciated.
BTW i suck at scripts so if theres one invloved can anyone make me one

thanks alot

2 questions:

  1. Does the train tracks bend, or are they straight?
  2. The train comes out of a tube in one end of the station and exits trough another tube in the other end, and that is the only time you see the train in the map?

(ScOrPiOn_37) #3

Yeah the only time the train is seen is when it comes out of one tube passes the station and goes into the tube the oposite side, and no the track does not bend its straight.

i actually did a working test of that a while back, if you like, send me your email and i will send you a working sample map and script so you can see how to do it.

my train_looping_test has 5 train cars that loop around to appear as a new one, coming out of a tunnel and entering a new one.

85k zipped file.

yeah ok, if I can have a look it would be nice. Steto0105@aol.com

Thanks.

email sent.

no luck sorry, cant change it from 5 trains down to 1. I dont want 5 carts just 1. I tried to change the script but its not having any. The train spwans in the right place just doesnt move… Any suggestions or anyone else got anything for me?

(MadMaximus) #8

well, its a train… unless its an engine with no cars. do you want more than 1 car at a time only? i mean… one train car on the tracks and no others around while it moves?

(ScOrPiOn_37) #9

Well its a subway station. And I want a train, I think ive decided upon 3 carrages now to pass the station. the only part of the map where the train can be seen is when it passes the station. And yeah I want the train of 3 carrages to pass by once wait about a minute then pass again. And loop it.

(MadMaximus) #10

well, thats the basicly the same what i sent you, instead mine loops constantly. you would just have to have a func_timer target a target_script_trigger to start the run and keep the func_timer at 60 seconds.

plus ajust a bit of the script.

Yes and I point back to my original post

BTW i suck at scripts so if theres one invloved can anyone make me one

I think you’ll find it’ll be quite tough to map without learning scripting. Ifurita wrote a good scripting for newbie’s guide. Search these forums for a link to it.

(ScOrPiOn_37) #13

I find it an easy dream to map without knowing it. because I dont need to know it to, Never had to in Q3 or JO or JA. They all had func_train’s so no need for any scripting for me. And ill show you what no script can do :

thats the subway station.

Why does everybody be so complicated, why wont anybody just be nice and say “sure buddy ill do it for you.” Instead of “heres a tut do it your self ya lazy f**k!” Iv I hadent tried to learn it I wouldent be asking for help. Because Id learn it just I dont get it 1 bit. It confuses me to death.

Very nice brushwork…

Let me clarify my statement - you’ll find it hard to have a map with objectives, barriers, moving vehicles, dynamite, construction, command posts, cap and grab, etc - basically any objective in ET - without do scripting. I assumed when I said map we’d all think it was a map for ET and included ET objectives since we are in the ET mapping forum.

I don’t see where I called you anything derogatory, but tried to help you by pointing you to a very good tutorial. But yet you attack me…I thought you’d like to learn scripting to make your map more enjoyable to the ET community. You say scripting is very difficult for you, but yet you want some one just to whip one up for you. Have you thought that maybe it’s not an easy thing to do? Plus you’d just come back for more scripting when you wanted a command post, or a constructible…

PS - I think scripting is easy and could whip up one for you in 5 minutes max. But I also spent months learning scripting. If you had posted your script and asked what you did wrong, more people would have helped. But just the ‘I need a script - some one make me one’ will not garner any help.

(ScOrPiOn_37) #15

Yes well you see, in the matrix which a map of what it is, there is no command posts or dynamite or what not. You see it use to be a mod for Q3, which when the ET source code came out we decided it best to use ET. And in Q3 you do not need scripting because most things were done though entities and what not not.

And I wasnt attacking you, I was just giving a general overview of how people are in general if you ask for something done.

But I dont know whats hard to understand about ive tried to learn scripting, I tried my best for 2 months to get to grips with it, but I sucked compleetly and gave up.

(chavo_one) #16

If you are making a mod, tell your coders to get rid of the scripting requirements and move everything back into map entities.

I was just giving a general overview of how people are in general if you ask for something done.

Most people are working on their own projects and don’t have time to be freelance problem solvers. Your best bet, as Mustard stated, is to post what you accomplished and then have people help you the rest of the way. No one here is running a welfare system.

(ScOrPiOn_37) #17

I have acomplished a great deal of f**k all because I CANT SCRIPT!!! how many times do I have to type this out here ill type it 10 more times just so you know and then maby after reading it 10 more times it might sink in.

1)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
2)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
3)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
4)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
5)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
6)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
7)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
8)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
9)I CANT SCRIPT!!!
10)I CANT SCRIPT!!!

and if it hasnt sunk in after that then well you got problems.
Id love to show what ive done. But i havent done anything, why? Because I cant script.
Now dont be a smart ass and tell me oh heres a tutorial go learn it. Because I tried and failed misrably.

and as for :

Most people are working on their own projects and don’t have time

I point you in the words of Mustard :

PS - I think scripting is easy and could whip up one for you in 5 minutes max

I mean 5 minutes isnt a long time. So chavo, you trying to tell me everybody here are so much of a skivs they cant give up 5 meesly minutes to help out a fellow mapper. Then I think this place is looking preety grim.

(Mr_Tickles) #18

I think what they want you to do is actually show that you have at least attempted to work your way through the tutorials and tried to learn something by yourself.
Remember, no-one here is obliged to answer your questions, so take some initiative and show that you’ve tried it and aren’t just wasting their time.

Have a good go at it then post what you think you have as your script, if you get stuck or get horribly lost then say “This is the point at which I get lost”.
But at least post your attempts in the form of a txt file. Even if it’s just a line or two (preferably more than that though).
I’m in the same boat as you at the moment, I haven’t even looked at scripting yet, I have no idea of how to set up even a command post for which there are loads of tutorials,
but I plan to go through them when I come to that stage. And then, if I have problems, i’m going to grovel and post whatever amount of script I have and ask where I’m going wrong.

Edit:

I do not want to write your script for you (even though it would take 5 minutes for the train), because you’d then expect me to write the next script part for your next entitiy, etc. And I believe others are not offering to write the script for the same reason. I’ve been more than willing to help debug other mapper’s scripts in the past (it’s not fun and it’s tedious). But they were willing to learn how to fix their scripts, so they would not need help later on or so they could help other mapper later on.

We are willing to help you, but not do work for you. At least three times people have said post what you have and say I’m stuck here. Each time you just say “I can’t script”. Without an entity list (targetname, scriptname, etc), how are we supposed to help ‘write’ a script for you? I could pull a routine from my script and post it (that has a script_mover as a sliding door). But it would do you no good because you’d have to modify it to fit your entities. So, help us help you. Post what you have…

the way i learned scripting was making box-maps myself…
trying 2 make a wall dynamited… a tank 2 ride in circles etc. etc. (using tuts.)
