After many hours of trying to trace this fault I have found a solution that has worked for me.
I hope this works for others.
After watching a working copy of Brink start normally on my laptop, I concluded that it was probably crashing at the point when the sound card gets switched on when the first video begins. This led me to try running the game with the sound card disabled.
First of all, go into Device Manager and find your sound card. (Mine is an ASUS Xonar D2)
Right click on the sound card and select ‘Properties’
Go to the ‘Driver’ tab and click on ‘Disable’
Click OK and restart your computer.
When you come back into Windows go straight to Steam and start Brink.
If the game starts but without sound, you probably have a similar issue to mine.
By experimenting, I have discovered that the problem with my sound card seems to be caused by a mixer application that installs along with the sound card drivers. By eliminating the mixer application and just installing the bare driver into Windows, Brink starts normally with the sound working.
Please let me know if this works for you. It would be nice to know that all the effort trying to solve this problem for myself has helped others too.
It would also be nice to hear from the developers too, to see if this issue can be addressed in a future patch of the game. For me it’s not the end of the world losing the mixer application, but it may save others this trouble in the future.
Excellent deduction!
As this is a driver conflict, there’s nothing we can do other than advise users to take these steps if they have an ASUS Xonar D2 sound card.
