I don’t see the point of this. I would prefer a flexible (colors, icons…) clan tag where each one decides what to show.

It could be server-side controlled thing as it is already in most of the W:ET mods for example. So you could decide if you want to have it or not. But you would have to have an own game server first…

Country borders are not universally accepted. Not just borders, also whole countries to begin with. The pure presence of a flag can offend another nation. Palestine, Northern Cyprus or Kosovo for instance are regions that cause a lot of controversy. It’s much easier to just stay away from these things and let players battle these things out for themselves with clantags or just reduce it to continents. Also the moment you bring nationality prominently into a scoreboard it’s just asking for trouble.

I guess we can’t have both (country flags + avatars) as it would make a mess on scoreboard :o

This doesn’t contribute with anything to building the game’s community, on the contrary. Instead of making each player feel like he “belongs” to the greater DB family, by taking him out of the communities he’s part of, through social or geographical convention, you keep pulling him back down to them.

This shouldn’t be really an issue (and for a lot of ppl isn’t really) but the amount of players that let themselves drawn into some useless xenophobic rage, just because another player “dared” to type in chat something else than the “server’s” language is quite staggering and I think everyone of us has seen this happening a lot of times.

Given we’re gonna have friends and all sorts of account stats and data persistence, put that in the profile and if somebody really wants to take a peek, he can see it along with some other info. And there’s nobody stopping you from placing a nice flag on your avatar for everyone to see, if national pride is that much important to you.
