converting a mod Quake 3 -> ET

(Wolfenstein3d) #1

Hi!
I want to get some info on this subject. What would it take to convert a Quake 3 mod to Enemy Territory?
Does anyone have any experience with it? What are the differences between the engines? I’m mainly thinking about the code but any suggestions would be great.

(fretn) #2

it really depends how big your mod is, about what kind of mod are you talking?

(LION) #3

theoretically you can convert it but as fretn said it really dependes on the complexity of you mod…
but its possible

and you need to have the sources

(Jaquboss) #4

you dont need sources , you can always do it yourself again

Well I was thinking about Western Quake 3 -> http://www.westernquake3.net/.
All the sources including models are there. Did anyone try doing anything like this?

I’m working on the wq3 code (the mod in question here) now. I haven’t really looked closely at the porting issue yet, since it will be too much for me now anyway. But I’m also concerned about the model issue. As far as I know, there is still no easy way to convert the md3 files into the format that ET uses. And you can’t use md3 for playermodels in ET.

Maybe the Q3F guys ported their code when they made ETF? True Combat has also been ported to or remade on the ET engine. And they’re working on porting Urban Terror, I think.

Well torhu : using md3 for player model is just question of code, basicly it shouldnt be as hard to use md3 , but remmember that you must rewrite whole animation code
TCE is based on ET code not converted Q3 code ( just play some first versions ) , Urban Terror isnt ported by same team , isnt it?

Yeah, TCE reskinned the ET playermodels, they didn’t replace the MDMs.

1st person weapons models will port easily - you might want to add reloading anims (which Q3 didn’t have), or leave them as-is. You’ll need to mess about a bit with the .weap files (for ET).

Q3F guys = splash damage btw… and RR2DO2 did most of the major porting of q3f to et for them. and etf is actually based off of q3 and its sdk not et. therefore etf still uses md3’s which are still in pieces and u can see the inbetween of the torso and legs.
