Or they could’ve just said “fck that” and give us nothing. Nobody would complain.
I mean come on, it’s free. If you do not care about rarity of your card, you don’t care about a huge part of the game.
A huge part of the game? What are you talking about? Werent the developers not about, how they wanted to make a FPS like in the old days? And you are saying that having a pretty and rare dress is a huge part of the game?
Collecting merc cards & trading them up is a big part of the game. Otherwise the cards wouldnt even be there and the system would look like the one from wolfenstein enemy territory.
You’re viewing it wrong. Everyone gets either a merc valued at 9.99 euros/dollars, or two elite case valued at 9.99 euros/dollars + an obsidian card.
So everyone gets basically something for a value of 9.99, and if you own Pheonix, the latest released merc, already by the time the update comes out, you’re seen as a player who already has had the game for a while and you get on top of your 9.99 gift an additional obsidian loadout card, as a thank you for the loyalty.
So in the end it’s like you and all your siblings are getting a birthday gift. Your parents went to the shop and decided to get everyone a 9.99 gift. Everyone got the same to be fair, but you already got the gift that others hadn’t, so to not leave you empty handed, they chose you something else for the same value and even added something extra to it that you cannot get anywhere for money to show you their love. And when you complain about that it’s very ungrateful. That’s how I see it.
It’s nice that you know what is wrong and right. Some people just have a different point of view.
To pick up your example with the siblings. It’s more like you are collecting toys and your parents tell you, you have to buy them yourself. So each of you buy a different one. Few weeks later your parents decide to give all of you the same toy as a present. And since you already have that particular toy, they decide to give you some new clothes for it, you dont care about. So all your friends have 2 toys now and you have your toy in a red dress + 2 dresses you maybe dont even have the toys for and you maybe even dont like at all.
And about it has the same worth. If i give all your friends $9.99 and I give you the equal worth of feathers, you couldnt trade in for $9.99. How happy would you be.
I just think it was a bad decision to give away a merc for free, other already paid credits/money for and giving those a gift, lot of them dont care about. In the end, everybody who didnt buy Phoenix have now something in game, they really can use, an additional merc, where others get something cosmetic. So some people get something functional, were I would assume most of them care about, and others get something cosmetic, a lot of them dont care about.
Its nice, that a lot of people get a new merc, and if it helps the game, great! I will still buy my starter set from steam to support the game and I am not at least bitter. Phoenix is my main and if I ever wanted a rare special for any merc then it would be for him.
I just believe that they really didnt think through, that giving some people something functional and some people something decorative, might be not the best idea. And I just didnt get all the hype for the present the phoenix owners get. The whole thing feel to me just like a well meant thing not carried out too well.
I don’t know which rarity you have (bronze i suppose?) but the obsidian is special, it’s way better than other rarities. In half a year, if you are still playing DB (i hope so, the more the merrier) you’ll appreciate that skin in the long run far more than 50k credits.
Yes, I have a bronze card. And if you could explain me, why the obsidian is better then my bronze, I would love to hear it (no sarcasm), because I really cant see it.
As I see it atm I get a Bronze card, which makes part of my Phoenix skin red. And when I think about, how the blue elements of cobalt cards sometimes let players confuse enemies with team mates and the cobald owners getting an advantage from that, I am inclined to believe that having red elements on your skin could, in the heat of the battle, make team mates confuse you with an enemy. Thus maybe shoot you instead of an approaching enemy. Therefore, how I see it, the obsidian could even be a disdvantage in game.

Really? When I read the forums and somebody is asking about load outs, most people recommend to just buy the load out you want for 17.5k and not wasting time and credits trading load outs up and getting cards you dont even want.
And again, if this is a huge part for you, fine. But for a lot of people it isnt. And they kind of dont bother for this super hyped reward. If you looking forward to having this card. Good for you. And I mean it.
These two things are not mutually exclusive. Many people have wrong opinions.
Now I can understand that people dislike the give-away as a concept. I myself have expressed in another thread my opinion against giving away mercs. Yet I’m not requesting a substitution of what is essentially a gift. I’m not ungrateful.
You’re wrong in saying that the loadouts are just decorative because they are in fact functional. Now imagine someone has Pheonix already, and either one or more of the purchasable mercs. The loadouts coming out of the elite cases, will be a functional upgrade from a no rarity, lead or iron loadout. And if you don’t currently own the merc you get a loadout for, maybe that’ll influence your next choice of merc purchase. Or you can use it in trade-in’s and trade-up’s. It definitely has more than just cosmetic changes.you’ll have something indeed functional.
If you already own the obsidian loadout in another rarity, well it is purely cosmetic. But if one day, they implement an in-game loadout trading feature, you might get a good deal out of trading him. Besides it’s just a bonus on top of the two elite cases worth the same as the give-away merc.
Ofc it has no ingame advantage since it’s cosmetic. But it’s something you’ll have and other players that will join the game (or those that are in but don’t own Phoenix until the patch) will never get. I thought in a similar way when i started but now i’d really love to get that founder Vassili obsidian, which i’ll never get (unfortunately). Maybe you can’t appreciate it now, but i’m sure with due time you’ll be grateful you had that instead of another merc (because in the long run you’ll eventually purchase every merc)
Hi, I was unsure if buy Phoenix or Sparks before this event giveaway.
I quite like medics gameplay so, another medic can’t hurt.
I had 50k credits I collected giving my time, the most important value we have in our life, to the game, and I enjoined, I chose to do so. It is not like the DB team or someone else forced me to do so. I did choose to install DB, play it in his actual form, a beta, and be happy or not about what I’d get, remember, for FREE.
I’ve already bought other mercs with real money. It was my choice, I gave up a cocktail or two and I bought something I spend time on. Am I happy ? even if I don’t use all the mercs I have so often ? Sure I am. I do not regret my choice.
Yesterday I chose to spend my 50k credits on Spark, however I’ll get Phoenix for free, as a gift for us as beta tester. So I’ll have a different medics.
Let’s say I did choose Phoenix to get the 2 AB cases and the obsidian card, I should have been pretty sure to play him and like its gamestyle.
What if I bought Phoenix before… and realized I don’t like to play him ? Would/should I be upset for this giveaway ? I say NO.
Everything you do in this game and in other games is always your choice, matchmaking apart.
You can’t be upset for what developers decide to do actually, 1st because is still a Beta and everything could change. You also are getting a merc for free, that is not a due thing. You decide to buy Phoenix before, you decide to not buy, you decide to buy it now to get the obsidian card and cases.
I’ve absolutely nothing personal against who is wining and is your “right” to complain , but this is not the case, ihmo.
Things could be in your favor and sometimes could be against you.
ps: I think I’ll not be able to get Phoenix now, no credits, but as DMaster2 said, those who own him now, will be happy in the long run to have that Obsidian card.
@MissMurder
Erm… Is there some way of choosing your reward instead of getting it automatically?
Obsidian cards are a big deal and I don’t wanna miss out on them.
I’m currently saving up for Phoenix, but I don’t think I’ll make it in time before the update drops. Could it maybe be made possible to buy phoenix during this week (even if you own him) to get the other rewards? Or anything else that would get me that sweet obsidian card really.

Unfortunately it has been told many times already that it doesn’t work that way. If you don’t have Phoenix, you’ll get him, if you do, you get the obsidian and the elite cases. There’s no in-betweens.

If you can’t save enough credits until today you have to purchase Phoenix with real money or you’ll get him for free when the patch hit.
