[CONSTRUCTIVE] Im done with DIRTY BOMB - Why?

(IronTarkus) #1

Hello guys, I uninstalled DB a minute ago, and this thread is a post-mortem of the experience I had to help the developers better understand what drove me to quit, and how to improve their game. (I know Im not a special snow-flake, its called feedback)

Before I start let me say that there are many good things about dirty bomb. The artstyle is fresh, readable and well executed. The card aspect of the game is also a refreshing way to tackle loadouts, more later on its flaws but its a change. Hit detection is not catastrophic and the overal gameplay is fun even though there are elements that diminish it. Now what follows is what got me to quit in order of importance.

Cheaters:

Fear not, Im not the type of people to hackusate every time I die. Im also not the type to rage quit over a cheater every 10th game. I played other games before this one that I though were relatively highly populated by cheaters but it didnt stop me from playing. But oh boy, from the experience I had with DB, I was dead wrong.

At first, of course before reaching level 5, I played using the server browser, and cheaters werent really apparent outside of the competitive mode. So everything was fine. It is a whole another story when you finally join competitive. I didnt mind it at first, I would say I encountered cheaters every 5th game. I thought I was unlucky. But weeks are going by, and every time I play, there is one every 2 game and Im not exagerating. That is, in the gold bracket. Not only does it completely ruin the competive aspect, but it create a very, very, VERY TOXIC environment.

Wow, my playtime which was supposed to be enjoyable is now a PURE source of frustration and this is unacceptable. Every time a cheater enter a game, its 9 others players that you can potentialy lose. Its slowly wearing people down, especialy those who want to play your game seriously. It should be your priority number 1 to eradicate them. It really takes A LOT of them to make me quit a game. In gold bracket, competitive mode, they are rampant. Certainly because they exit level 5 with insane statistics and end up directly in that bracket.

The grind:

The grind in itself isnt too bad. It takes about a week and an half to earn 50 000 credits if you complete your missions by playing with a character you dont want to play with… and play both modes every session… and dont waste money “trading up” your cards.

Forcing someone to play a character that he dont want to play or isnt optimal for the situtation is a fun killer. The second you logging and you are greeted with a less than inspiring character mission is certainly something that doesnt help with player retention. Forcing people to do something they dont want to do, something they dislike, is a big no-no. Replace them with missions such as deal X damage, gain X xp, score X headshots, Heal X amount, Revive X people, melee kill X people, finish X people, complete X objectives(main and side)… you know, generalist missions that get done no matter who you choose to play with. Generalist missions that let you play as you see fit, without forcing you to do something you dont want to.

I certainly dont want to waste my game time playing as aura when I hate her gameplay, have no loadout card for her. dislike her apearance especially when what I am good at is completing objectives.

I say “force” because missions are the only reliable way to make decent money if you are a free player. I mean, even if you have 17 000 XP during a match, its not the pathetic 200 credits you win that will get you very far. Please, less emphasis on missions, but more on performances. Right now there are no reasons to play once said missions are completed and they are on 2 hours cooldown. This is a terrible mechanic anyway, get rid of the cooldown, drasticaly lower the income for missions if you have to and introduce much more fast paced generalist missions that actually follow the theme of the game, fast paced combat. Make them pop ingame as you complete them, congratulate the player with big $$$ symbols, fireworks and whatever you want. Then instantly replace them with another one. Motivate the player to play, and keep playing.

Loadout cards:

Whoever make the loadout cards need to be switched out with someone who knows how to min-max. Too many of them are really terrible. I understand that some cards have to be worse, it is inevitable that one card is better than the others… but some of them are just sad.

Right now, people choose a primary weapon that they like the most, then decide what are the least terrible augments coupled with that weapon. Add to that some out of place and useless augments and you have a depressing mechanic. For example, Its beyond me why Phantom only have 3 loadouts with the katana, only 2 cards have the chopper augment(one of them is not even with the katana) and none have the quick slash augment. What the hell? Redeye is a better phantom than phantom is. His smoke actually hide him better and even got the G41 loadout that make him better at melee.

Anyway, some augments are just too weak to ever be useful or even noticable. Get rid of them and replace them with actual augments that are not game changing, but not far from it. NOTICABLE buffs like “get up” and “potent packs” are perfect for Sawbonez… but you need to have near equivalent augments for his other loadouts otherwise its a no brainer, and that sucks.

PS: Let us “burn”(still in the card theme) Cobalt cards into lead or iron cards already.

Skins:

First of all, whoever thought that making the “ultimate” skin blue, in a game where one of the team is blue and the other is red is, sorry to be blunt, plain dumb. Its the best camouflage in the entire game, hell it makes you look like you are part of the enemy team.

Not only that, but this game is BEGGING to sell cosmetics. I didnt buy Rhino because his face is ugly as hell. Would you have sold an helmet to hide his ugly face, you would have made money off me. Im sure its the same for many people. Your character are very “personalised” and not everybody like that… It could all be solved with card sleeves. You are wasting an oportunity with ugly ass recolor that intelligent people wont even use because its a 1/9 chance that its a subpar loadout. Seriously, split them up asap, you are losing money right there.

That being said, I have no idea why you wasted time and ressource giving them personalities in a game where it doesnt even get noticed. There isnt any real story, there are clones of them all over the place dying over and over left and right. Nobody care about their backstory, it bring nothing to the game. The only thing that matter is their silouhette, so you know who you are dealing with. Hell, its probably why phantom was so popular, he have a mask. People can idendity to him to an extent, and really thats the only thing that people care about in a competitive multiplayer game. People decorate their character not for the others, but for themselves. Every body want to get ingame and think “my guy look damn cool”… I like rhino’s gameplay, but his IMPOSED apearance his turning me off.

TLDR and Suggestions:

Cheaters are rampant in competitve mode (gold)
Dont tell people what to play
Less emphasis on missions, but more on performances
Dynamic, generalist and fast missions
Get rid of useless augments, introduce truely game changing augments
Rebalance all the loadouts to diminish the obvious choice (min/max)
Invest into the Card theme (Sleeves, variety bundles, card terms et cetera)
Get rid the blue skin
Seperate the skins from the loadout
Sell cosmetics
Let us open case while in lobby

@sapphireConfection They don’t force you to play anyone for missions, only to have them in your squad. You just have to earn that type of EXP with ANY merc while that specific merc is in your squad. You never have to play them.

DirtyBomb is apparently being targeted by a group of cheaters according to the mods. Play pubs in the meantime and not competitive. New anti cheat IS a priority and is on the way.

Don’t you dare touch my pretty blue cobalt that I worked freaking hard to get!

The devs have said separating skins from the loadout is a good idea, meaning they are considering it, maybe.

Opening cases in lobby is a good idea.

Selling cosmetics could help the game. I am torn on it.

  1. The cheating issue is already a priority and will hopefully be in a much better position soon.
  2. The missions are optional. Don’t do them if you don’t want to.
  3. I can agree with that, but I am not too worried about it atm. Not a priority as earning credits is fairly easy at the moment.
  4. Missions shouldn’t need to be fast. They should simply be worth doing. Also, most missions can be completed in 2-3 matches. Sounds fast to me.
  5. The augments were never supposed to be game changing. More optional side-grades. A few augments broke that guideline(such as get-up), but we will see what comes in the future.
  6. I can agree with a rebalance. I would like to see a clear difference in the quality of the guns with slightly better perk combinations being on the ‘worse’ guns.
  7. More cosmetic changes will come later. Bigger priority on bugs/cheaters imho.
  8. I don’t really see this being that big of an issue imho. While the team ‘color’ is blue, the default team skins aren’t all that blue in the first place. Silver/gold skins don’t look blue at all, yet you can still easily be aware they are on your team.
  9. This has been mentioned in the dev stream and Shoe gives some grins whenever he answers it. This might be coming, but no confirmation either way at this point. Again, higher priorities.
  10. Again, larger priorities atm. And I would like to see them step away from selling mercs, but there really isn’t a big incentive to buying cosmetics at the moment. To generate income and keep the game going merc selling will be a thing for a good while. Might stay for life, but we will see.
  11. Good suggestion. Seen it probably a good dozen times by now. Hope it gets implemented.

EDIT: Moved to Off-Topic. “I’m Quitting” threads get moved here.

1: Good, I will check it out when I hear about it
2: No they are not, its the only decent income for a free player as explained in the original post.
4: Completing missions is relatively fast, as you say 2-3 missions… waiting 2+ hours for missions refill is definetely not. So in the end, missions are slow paced and oposite to the nature of the game. They need to be reforged.
5: Players work for two things: Mercs and loadouts. If loadouts are annecdotic minus the weapons, then its not really motivating to grind for them as they barely change anything. Anyone would settle with a low quality and be done with it.
6:We both agree!
7: 3D artist dont work on solving bugs. Plus you need to plan your pipeline early for customisation. Right now, items on the character seems to be attached to them. For exemple, remove a piece and there is probably no polygon under it.
8: I consider myself a very good FPS player and I got fooled by it. Right off the bat in gold league and Im usually in the top 3. It doesnt cost the game per say, but its not a very insightful choice.
9: Cool beans.
10: There are always good reasons to buy cosmetics.
11: Me too

Im sad to see this get buried in off topic when I believe its good feedback. It is all about the game and far from being “off topic”. Would it get moved back with a different title/introduction? Its just that, an introduction which led me to make this thread. So yeah…

(Jan S.) #5

It probably wouldn’t get moved if you would name it something like “My issues with Dirty Bomb”. With this title, you’re basically saying “Here is what I don’t like, see you in never”.

(Ottah) #6

I dont see how providing valueable feedback to the game developers is considered offtopic but okay…

(MTLMortis) #7

This needs to be #1 priority overriding anything right now. It’s quite literally killing the user base off day by day. Calling it rampant would be an understatement. Every night I come across people trigger and aim botting. That’s not an idle throw it out there comment. That’s evidence through spectating.

People need their carrots. Missions are an integral part of the game. A heft size of the players do so to complete missions. They change loadouts because of missions. If that wasn’t the case I’d be playing the merc I have the most fun on all the time.

A lot of the missions are simply not worth doing for the frustration involved. Win competitive mission? Instant-cancel. for me, that is directly because of the cheating and the imbalanced skill levels. I would venture to guess, and this is pure speculation I do not have any idea of the actual numbers, that the majority of players are not ranked. Simple fix, not ranked, don’t get competitive mission. Who voluntarily signs up to be beaten over the head by competitive players? People that want to play that mode will.

(Ardez1) #8

Actually, the playerbase seems to have stabilized since the 5th of August(7 days ago) between 6-7k. Of course nobody would think to update their trendy graphs with the current information. Halp! The sky is falling!

+1 to this. Fooled me twice. I know different people see colors differently. I am a stereotypical male that can name about 16 colors. Cobalt skin on enemies is way too blue for me. Every other skin is 100% fine.

(RyePanda) #10

So… you quit because:

  1. There were cheaters in competitive (I just play pubs though I’ve seen them there too) that’s understandable but pubs are really clean from cheaters.

  2. You don’t get characters quick enough (They do need to make money and reward long time players with more options). They can’t hand out credits and still make as much money.

  3. You didn’t like certain missions you got (There are 2 other mercs in your squad) though I do see your point I don’t think it’s game-breaking.

  4. Some loadouts weren’t as good as others (It’s inevitable) though some rebalance could be nice. Also doesn’t seem to be a huge issue.

  5. You didn’t like how characters looked.

Besides cheating those don't seem like huge issues.

(IronTarkus) #11

Thats probably the most innacurate and worst summary of one of my post I ever read. Your reading comprehension is highly uneficient. Instead of changing people post with your own flawed and ill-intentioned post, just post your own impression, alright?

(XavienX) #12

Idk what people don’t get. IT’S STILL IN OPEN BETA FOR ONLY A MONTH SO FAR.

(HardCoreGamer44) #13

This Is Why I Don,t Play Competive Never Have Never Will I Just Don,t Get Into The Competive Seen And I Agree That The Credit System Don,t Give What It Should But They Will Work On It Down The Rode & If You Play Pub Matchs You Never See Hackers I Get To The Point I Wanna Quit Sometimes But I Pick Myself Back Up & Go On It,s Because I Suck At The Game But Cause I Can,t Aim Right Or Be Fast Don,t Mean I,m Gonna Quit I Love DB Like All My Games B)

(bontsa) #14

By all means I hope I do not sound tad too much offensive here but you sir, seem to generally have nice things to say. I rather sweetly desire you would however bring forth this cascade of thoughts in a form that does not immediately strike migraine comparable by Death only, in brains of the poor lad’s trying to read through them. One might safely assume we both recognize what could be the underlying reason for such unpleasant reaction here.

On topic though, thank golly AC update is coming up. We’ll see better and be smarter then of how Dirty Bomb will continue it’s walk on this wide Web.

(HardCoreGamer44) #15

Nope Your Not Offensive I Get Along With Anybody Unless They Rude Or A Smart As* But That,s Just Me

(IronTarkus) #16

“Idk what people don’t get. IT’S STILL IN OPEN BETA FOR ONLY A MONTH SO FAR.”(on my phone cant quote)

Its you who dont get it. There is no better time for feedback than during beta. But lets be honest here, the second there is a shop or money involved its NOT a beta despite the label.

Yeah, but you uninstalled it.
Uninstalling basically means you do not want to be involved anymore. Thats how it sounds to me.

(Ottah) #18

Or maybe he just has a small SSD?

(IronTarkus) #19

I uninstalled because as the game is right now its more frustrating than it is fun to play. Hence the feedback, things that should change so people with the same line of thought dont quit or if they already did, come back.

I wont be involved until playing competive is viable.
