Constructive Criticism on how to improve Brink. (Feel free to share your ideas)

(fprovost) #21

Character costumization - Replace Color palettes by a Color Wheel.

Gameplay - People can tank more damage downed than they do when they’re up with kevlar. Seems odd.

Gameplay - Operatives should be able to fire blank ammo. (appear to be firing but does no damage) This would make disguise actually usefull and also make the ‘‘Homing Beacon’’ perk more useful.

Overall - Give us an SDK, we’ll fix whatever we feel like fixing.

i wish the turrets were a little better, but my main concern is my idiotic friendly AI, which should be easily fixed by playing with people, but im on ps3 so im stuck with these idiots…

Alrighty here are some things that I think could improve the game that aren’t backbreaking to do:

1: Allow you to manage your abilities and weapons while in a game/in between rounds.

The reason I say this is because it’s a struggle to get 4 of my friends on the same team with me, then one of us levels up and in order to start using those bonuses they need to leave the server, go do it, come back if the server isn’t full and eventually try to swap teams again. If you let us have access to those things without having to disconnect it would make things infinitely easier. Even a stripped down version without all the graphical elements would be good because this is a needed bit of functionality for the game.

2: Allow characters to change body type in game

First off I absolutely love the way the body types interact in the game. The big problem I am having though is there have been times where I need to switch a body type for flanking or a more sturdy one for heavy weapons and defense. I know it sounds silly to change your characters size on the fly but for functionality I think it is a necessary change. There have been MANY occurrences where I am light and need the underslung grenade launcher on my soldier or heavy and can’t flank. I’m sure people who flick between them can attest to this that it is super annoying to have to disconnect from a server then switch, then rejoin. It’s pretty simmilar to the last point.

3: If not body switching, then character switching

If you find that giving that is too much then at least let us change our characters mid game. Not only for different bonuses that are required for certain moments but I could go through the trouble of leveling up 3 characters, one light, medium, and heavy just to have access to the body switch problem.

4: Continued community support

This one I can’t speak for necessarily seeing as the game has been out for a few days but the thing that can take this game from good to great like Team fortress 2 is the updating, balancing, and more additions. I would really like these to be free for the consumer at least on PC (I know xbox has restrictions about such updates). This game is just one of those games that will see continued purchases LONG after the release date if there is continued updates. New maps, weapons, attachments, character models, etc. This game wont see super long replay value if these are implemented but in large purchase chunks to take our money. See almost every shooter out there ever that waits 3 months then charges 10 dollars for a few maps, does it one or two more times then forgets the game. From seeing the videos on your website I can tell the team really cared about this game so I pray that they continue to care long after the release. If that’s the case then I will be a long term customer of splash damage games.

Then some of the lesser ones:

4: At the very least let us change the colour of our guns

I love the customization in this game and the thing is I want more! I want to make everything about my character unique if possible and I’m certain others can attest to this.

5: More character models, especially female ones

The look of the game is fantastic and giving us more archetypes would be sweet. With the amount of customization, more colors and clothing would be sweet. I can’t really complain so far with what’s gone on though but is it a bad thing to want more of what you are already doing a good job on?

6: Improve the operative class

Let them give people a good buff or better ways to utilize disguise. This class just feels like a stripped down version of the others and rarely do I find people actively being the operative. They can do cool things like give radar of the opponents which is powerful but it’s not enough. It would be really cool if you let the operative hack things while in disguise because that should be pretty balanced within it self with the warnings. You see someone mulling around your base camping when all of a sudden the objective starts being hacked! If you could do this in disguise people would go all shoot happy on each other which is the kind of dismay the operative should cause. Firing blank bullets is another good suggestion that do no damage because it adds credibility to the disguise. The spy in tf2 uses the disguise to get close then cloak to assassinate. This operative doesn’t have a 1hk OR cloak so it lacks. Making the disguise believable/useful would be a great idea and balanced by a higher CD or something.

Thanks for reading and I hope someone from SDG could reply to this thread to show they are listening

bump this please. This is a really important topic

(BioSnark) #25

I agree, very. The elevator music sux. fixplz.

(Butcher Rabbit) #26

I’ll throw my 2 cents into this dog pile, because this is one of the few games that I think suggestions from players can actually be implemented and helpful. I will not talk about the technical issues (such as the “no sound” map or the ATI card problem).

1. Customization:

Color Options. What is in place now is a good start, but I want a main color and trim color option on all my gear.

Weapons. Specifically, I want weapon color schemes, especially for the Resistance. I want a bright red or orange or any color option, and/or various decals.

Characters. Female characters. I have no idea why this game shouldn’t have female character models. It’s a civil war between refugees and urban security forces set in the near(ish) future. Women serve in many armed forces, police and security forces in reality, and refugees are rarely all male. And civil war over critical resource shortages affect everyone.

Weapon Modifications. Frankly, I enjoy what there is. Off the top of my head I can’t find any major problems I have with what’s there, or any that I’d like to see added.

The Operative. It just doesn’t seem to be a class that has a lot of “wow” or utility factor. I know they have their uses, and frankly the game’s new so true strategies leveraging the use of every class have not even been developed yet, but at the moment I don’t even have any interest in playing as an Operative.

Conclusion: continue offering more customization. What’s there is a good base, but has room for improvement. Make the Operative feel more useful (though I can wait a bit and see what the players do with what’s available now). And please trickle feed in small additions, and only sell truly sizable DLC (like, say, the female model pack + a few new maps + some new weapons might make one buyable DLC, but not new color + tattoo + clothing options).

All I REALLY NEED:

Fix the lag on the 360.
Enable better support for clans (if possible this late in the game).

What I really want:

More maps (I’m more than aware that’s probably already underway).
More customizable content
Maybe 1 more game mode?

Other than that, this game will at least last me another 5 months.

I’m putting my criticism in categories of importance to me and what I think would help competitive Brink.

Most important.
Lobby Systems- Can’t say enough how much a Lobby would improve this game

In Game Customization- If not weapon customization, I’d at least like to be able to switch body types in game. Also you should be able to switch out your abilities at a control panel, i don’t like having to choose knowing I can’t switch if I wanted to.

Gametypes- I like the objective minded gametypes, but to me it’s too much objective. It turns people off from the game, and something familiar to other gamers can’t hurt.

Not so Important.
Look- It’s a little glossy. To me range battles are a show of more skill than close range SMG spray battles, and the glossy look makes it a little harder to aim with rifles with accuracy.

Private Matches- When you’re playing a private match and deciding which map you want to play on, on the side it should show the map, not your character.

Weapons- SMGs seem a little OP to me. Maybe it’s just because I’m not a CoD kid, but I love using pistols and rifles as my main weapons, they just give me more pride knowing I got a kill with skill rather than holding down a trigger.

Yes to replacing color palette with a color wheel - I remember seeing that blue sheet of paper with how much you can customize your character, that was frigging deceiving as hell, we couldn’t even adjust our faces to our liking there is already predetermined characters so you are forced to take it or leave it, I also though the gear and clothing would be a bit more dynamic.

other then that I agree with literally everyone points on this thread and since i see half of the devs on i’ll give this a bump.
Yes, I understand that. But look at the choices you do have. For all this hype about character customization, you have to admit, it feels pretty… empty? Unfinished?

Like I said, Brink has GREAT ideas, it just feels like the execution was half-assed on a lot of them. And I mean this with the utmost respect.
the coustimization is good to me for an online fps

(boozee84) #31
360 version
Aiming
The aiming could be a little bit improved, but already is better than a lot of other FPS, but can’t compete with CoD or Halo yet.

Bug!?
Allow us to shoot while passing from the hip to in iron sight.

Image quality
Improve the clarity of the image, it’s all blurry and lack anti-aliasing. Looks like a bad resolution, but maybe it’s just the post-process. I mean Modern Combat Domination ($8 game) offers a better image quality than Brink and its engine is miles behind id tech 4.

Proper match statistics
Also display kills, headshots, accuracy, etc.

Search game browser!
Add a search game browser like R6 Vegas 2.

Create and host public game
Instead of join games or create if there are none.
disagree on the match statistics, i think they’re fine the way they are.
displaying ingame k/d would perhaps encourage kill farming.

agreed on anything else.
i’ve experienced a freeze issue multiple times while in the middle of a match, that should be fixed if possible.

but overall i just love this game, it’s a lot of fun.

Thanks everyone for your feedback so far. We’re definitely reading everything around here even though we’re not always replying.

(fearlessfox) #33

Thanks SD. All it takes is a post like this every now and then between patches to keep the more level headed among us appeased.

We all know you’re diligently labouring over the needed patches, of course, but a little nod of acknowledgement every now and then goes miles.

(LastGun) #34

yeah SD if you just add lobbies and fix the lag your popularity will SKYROCKET. i respect you tried to do without lobbies but it didnt turn out as we all hoped, so just 1 little fix will set things right and calm the community.

(hamstein) #35

Menus need fixing. Laggy server browser and when you customize your head it only allows “done” and goes back to the main menu…as in it exits the appearance custimization.

(Hubschrauber) #36

Crappy team AI and overpowered enemy AI needs fixed. I’d really like to have speed slings someday. I don’t wanna have to have three strokes and an aneurism just to be able to yank out my weapon faster.

In case you don’t understand, be more objective, two stars.

This, with PSN down i scream at my own teammates because there not doing anything while the enemy is using every tactic in the book.

(Bakercompany) #38

I actually like all the weapon and character customization. Compared to like the past 10 shooters that have come out recently, nothing has this level of customization. All the outfits while they are presets with preset colors, look fantastic. I had no problem creating a character I really liked for both sides. And I freaking LOVE the weapon mod system. I have my favorite AR and my favorite SMG tooled out just right.

I’m more worried about other things like lobbies, lag, game modes, and stat tracking.

I listed a ton of ideas I think would make this game perfect here…
