Confused mapper

(Zajoman) #1

Hi, guys.

I’ve been struggling hard to get started on mapping for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. I have some experience with mapping for HL1 and HL2, but I seem to be really lost here. I’ve read a few tutorials on how to get started, but they don’t seem to cover my very basic problem.

I install GtkRadiant 1.4.0, set up the path to the game, and start mapping. When I bring the texture window, there are only very few textures, or (sometimes, I haven’t really figured out when) just this “shader not found” system texture. Some tutorials tell me to install a game pack, which I have no idea about… I mean, there is one on the GtkRadiant site, but I have no idea how to actually install it or what to do with the tens of files.

I guess I’m missing a big step in getting started. Please, be sure I’ve done some research before I posted. To no avail - not a forum entry, not a tutorial dealing with this. I mean the problem is that it seems that no one has ever bumped into this particular problem, thus, there are no answers to it.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you haven’t pointed the radiant correctly to the game (wrong game path).

(Zajoman) #3

My ET is installed in C:\Games\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\

So Project settings -> basepath should be C:/Games/Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory/etmain/ ?

(-SSF-Sage) #4

Yeah and obviously ET should be selected.

(Zajoman) #5

Yes, so I have it right. But still, very few textures.

(stealth6) #6

what OS are you running? and the path should be
C:/Program Files (x86)/Mapping - Enemy Territory/
well that’s what mine is in NetRadiant (running 64-bit), and I have no problems.

(Zajoman) #7

Windows XP Professional SP 2. The path is correct, I believe. It refers to where the game is. Is it really all one has to do (to point the editor to the game) to have the editor work?

I still feel I’m missing something bigger.

(stealth6) #8

well if you are running gtk radiant 1.4 then it already supports ET, so yes you only need to set up the path accordingly and when gtk starts up select W:ET from the drop down menu.

For that part it is kinda like the HL editor  (I guess you used Hammer)

EDIT: good tuts here:

(Zajoman) #9

Yes, I used Hammer. Aaand… geez, I just cannot get things going. What about the game packs? My Radiant just does not work as you say.

By the way, thanks, guys.

(stealth6) #10

there is now mandatory gamepack, the gamepack that is availible just adds some images to textures in the editor, so you don’t see as much red/black textures.
I think the pack just contains a pk3 and you put that in your etmain.
Also check that you don’t have any texture filters on like only show shaders.

(Zajoman) #11

I have no filters turned on.

What is this game pack and where do I obtain it?

(stealth6) #12

well I am not sure how to solely get that pac, but it is included in valkyr’s mappack here:
http://l0x.in/archive/et-mapDevPack-2010-01-20.7z

Open that up inside inside you will find 2 folder and a readme, copy what is in the etmain folder to your etmain folder, and you’re good to go.

(Zajoman) #13

Thank you. I cannot extract any file from that archive, but I think I have finally figured the texturing out. I seem not to have actually grasped the basic picking method. Thank you, guys, really.

(stealth6) #14

well it’s not as easy a hammer, but once you read a few tutorials it shouldn’t be to hard to catch on to.

Also not sure what’s up .7z files but I use winrar that can open them and I think program used for making hl1 maps downloadable? can too? the .7zip program?

(BackSnip3) #15

I think you talk about that Gamepack,it installs script files, models and stuff,I had to install this on my 1.5 version or I had no textures like you said.
Hope it will help you.
:stroggtapir:

(Zajoman) #16

Well, actually, in 1.4.0 I have the textures. I was just completely confused about the interface and the fact that I was using both 1.4 and 1.5 at the same time and in 1.5 I really had no textures. Thank you.

Radiant asks for engine path, which is the one above etmain/

(Sternschubser) #18

hhmmmm…

do you have extract the pak0…pak1…pak2.pk3 in your mapping folder???

in this files are all textures

(DerSaidin) #19

Theres no need to extract any pk3s to use radiant. Radiant reads pk3s happily.

(Zajoman) #20

Guys, thank you. Everything works well now in 1.4.
