Complete Mapping Newbie Here with Questions

(Dark Killer) #1

Hi,

I just started trying out mapping like 2 days ago and already I have some success with it, I do have a couple of questions though:

How would I add objects like tables, radios, cabinets etc. to my map??

How can I create a terrain, do I have to somehow close it cuz if I just make a plane and give it a certain texture my map would leak so how would I create outdoor environments without the map leaking?

And last question, how can I make a perfect circle, what I want is some sort of a fountain structure and a circle road around it, I had some success in making terrain/road circles but they were a little odd on the sides and they didnt quiet look like real circles so any help here plz?

btw I enjoy map maknig already its a little tough starting out though!

hi dark killer!

the objects are either models or entities, like the health cabinets which are entities and the tank which is a model, you get all these by right click on the grid, then there are all the misc_models you can choose

for terrain creation you should use easygen, there are some tutorials on it available but i don’t know if there’s an up to date one, at least mine is not quite up to date but you could read it as well for understanding the basics (www.wolfproject.net), there are many tutorial-links in the sticky readme-thread and already there are many terrain questions here so just read everything you can get…

leaks: you need a structural brush to seal your world from the void, a patch isn’t structural and detail patches don’t work either, terrain is by default detail so the engine doesn’t calculate it in vis-process, when you use terrain you always have to enclose it in a structural hull, making hulls though is not an easy task but i recommend to learn how to do it before you do too much work with your map or at least to learn the basics of vis…

perfect circle: it’s not possible to do a perfect circle it always has edges but the edges you see in radiant don’t appear in game, in game circles (cylinders) are rendered rounded - your circle road could get difficult to do though, you could try to make a cylinder and thicken it or cap it and then remove all unused patches and so on but it would be difficult to line up the sorrounding terrain/brushwork with the road as the edges wouldn’t meet any grid points, so probably it’s better to either do a texture for your ground that looks like you want it with the road and grass or whatever painted right or to do the patchwork yourself by hand and do it as round as possible (but yet not perfect)…

did that help?

ya that pretty much helped a lot, I managed to create a circle that I was happy with but when I try to insert some misc_model and when I find the model I want to put in it just appears as a wireframe cube with lines going through it, am I doing something wrong or will it appear normal ingame?

also I have another question:

how do u make those telephone/eletricity poles with wires or is that another model too cuz they look great in some maps!

(MuffinMan) #5

can’t remember the electricity poles now, where did you see them? anyway i guess they are normal brushwork, the wires are probably square cylinders or thickened patches…

you could try to compile the map with these models and check if they work, but i read some threads here that there are problems with the model-paths in ET-radiant or something, i’m pretty sure you can find a thread on this topic here

is that your problem?:

(Dark Killer) #6

i saw the poles in fueldump near the bridge

yes that is my problem in that thread I tried compiling my map and the models weren’t there at all, I tried unpacking the pak0.pk3 or whatever it is into my etmain directory i tried reinstalling my gtkradiant and nothing helped I haven’t altered ET in any way so I dunno what’s wrong!

The problem with models is the path on the entities menu is wrong.

Select your model, press ‘n’, then where the key says model for the value make sure the pathname is

models/mapobjects/furniture/model name

instead of

C:/program files/wolfenstein/etmain/models/mapobjects/furniture/model name

I hope you understood that

(Dark Killer) #8

yes ty after 2 days of figuring this out it finally worked! ppl should sticky a tutorial on inserting models cuz a lot of newbies like me get stuck like this :banghead:

I’m also new, try reading some of the tutoriels and help pages, helped me alot, anywyas have fun

Ok, that helped me too, but its kind of annoying to do everytime i create an object…so how do i make that the new ‘default’ setting?

(sock) #11

The telegraph poles where original brushwork and then converted into an ASE model.

Sock
:moo:

(MuffinMan) #12

is there some advantage of making it an ase model?
