well i am a newbie at this and ive read loads of stuff

i couldnt compile my map and a mate did it for me to test

of course i found a few glitches which i fixed and now i cant compile it

i use bsp-meta like my mate did and i get a bsp file

i convert it to rar and then rename to pk3 and it wont work

rar archives aren’t supported. Use zip instead.

If you have WinRar, you can also save zip compressed files.

Search for pakscape … it works wonders.

You use it to create pk3 files.

-edit- you have to compile the map in Radiant first. Then you can create pk3 files.

i created it using that with the bsp file and renamed the zip to pk3 and yet it still didnt work

You need not make pk3 for testing map
compile your map, Bsp after compiling is in map folder
start Enemy territory go down console and type
sv pure 0
devmap your map name

I want to help. I need to know exactly what tutorial you followed (link please). If you did not follow a tutorial you need to describe in detail what you did (all the steps you took). Then it is much easier to aid.

|Are you renaming the the Mapname.bsp to mapname.zip to mapname.pk3. If so thats not how you do it.

Pimpmole, if you have to ask how to do something every step of the way, then your not cut out for mapping. Think and search on your own before you ask.
