Competitive Unbalancing Issue

(GrundleMan) #1

I just finished my third of three competitive matches that I’ve played and, not to overreact and freak out because three isn’t many, but each one was a pretty horrible experience.

First, my team was consistently at least half the levels of the entire enemy team, me usually being top or second highest at 11. That means I’d be relying on, not bad, but just less experienced players as teammates to watch my back against level 20+'s who obviously have more time playing the game and learning its nuances.

Second, in the first game, on Chapel, we were pushed INTO our spawn room, so closely pressured that we would die immediately out of spawn protection. After a couple minutes two of my team quit making the situation bitterly hopeless. So then it became a choice between feeding the enemy team for ten more minutes, then watching as they stomp on us as attackers, or just stop playing the game to go do something else while the timer ticked.

Third, given the bonuses that are provided for winning competitive matches, and now winning has become a possible mission assignment, there was at least one person using some kind of hack to guarantee these bonuses for themselves.

So with all that out there, I’ll reiterate that I’m totally aware that those were only three games and maybe I just got unlucky or, being unranked, that was me being put into games against more skilled teams, but the idea of imbalancing is still standing in my mind. Is that just the unranked misfortune or am I recognizing issues that are simply the game being an unfinished beta? Have you guys had similar experiences when you started playing competitive? Did those issues go away in time? Was the dress blue and black or white and gold? Was the White Gold Concordat fair? What do you think of all this?

MM is wrecked, don’t bother with it.

Definitely wrecked. My team of level 12-15 Gold 3/4 players got put against a team of level 29+ cobalt players yesterday. The previous game was against 2 of the same players, levels 29 and 30, and 3 unranked level 5s. We won that one by a hair.

Card ‘bling’ only has an advantage up to to bronze then it’s all cosmetic. Sadly it’s hard to balance games in general, when you factor in level, play time and many other things. Most of the time balancing fails because it can’t adjust for people who lack the ability to communicate in a team format. Comp needs alot of work.

Since the last patch, i had with some friends very nice Matchmaking. Even people at 8-7 level knew how to play. It could be random :)=

@Mister__Wiggles I think the guy above you meant the ranks gold and cobalt not the skins.

I’ve done 3 matches in competitive total.

1st - Other team only had 4 players. Was a slaughter.

2nd - Well played even match. very close at the end. Respectful and enjoyable enemy team.

3rd - Enemy team had a openly aimbotting player. I heard this happens frequently in the forums but hadn’t seen it before.

Aside from the 3rd match I have enjoyed competitive so far although I don’t have much data to go on yet so I’ll withhold judgment for now.

If thats the case then my bad!

That’s exactly what I meant.

They didn’t name them differently so it’s easy to see the mix-up, no worries!

I also ran into an openly aimbotting player whose name was “NOT AN AIMBOT” the game before we got the weird mismatch, he immediately stated that he was an aimbotter. A friend playing with a different team then told me right after that he ran into the same guy! I really do hope they fix both of these things. I really enjoy competitive but it’s not as much fun when you get ran over by really good players and hackers.

The MM queuing system is going to try and match you up with players who are of equal skill level but it’s also trying to match you up quickly using what is available. So sometimes you might end up playing a team with higher ranked players than your own. And this will happen not only because the system is trying to find a match for you quickly but because it’s also trying to calculate how well you’ll do if you face steeper competition. If you do well you rank up faster. If you do poorly you’ll be put against players closer to your actual skill level.

If anybody has ever played WoW they know how this system typically works (and I assume DB and CS probably use a similar, but hidden, system). In WoW arena PvP you get to see a teams rating but you also get to see the rating that the system THINKS the team should be able to achieve. I could start a new team and my rating might only be 1600 after a couple of games. But a second value is displayed and shows that the system believes you are playing at a 2300 level. So I get matched up against 2300 players and if I do poorly then it lowers that value without lowering my actual rating much. This is a way to allow really good players to rank up and play with people of their level quicker and a way to judge where players should be at overall.

So if you get matched up against much better players it’s possible that the system simply didn’t have enough players but wanted to get you a match so it put you up against higher ranked players. Or the system thinks that you can play at a higher level. Or it could be both. I’m not certain as I am privy to the details but that’s how it works in other games and it’s a solid system.

TLDR: Play more games and the system will probably match you up better over time.
