Competitive Tips for the Uncompetitive Player

OK… now that I have your attention with that weird title…

First off, hello… I’m not exactly new to Dirty Bomb. I’ve had the game installed for a long time, though I consider myself pretty much a noob having been dormant for a long time and only coming back a few days ago.

In that time I did a bit of an FPS tour: Battlefield 3, CoD Ghosts (Wii-mote/Nunchuck on Wii-U), and Rainbow Six Siege.

What I noticed though is I really liked something about Dirty Bomb which I think isn’t discussed often (if at all) for New Players. My experience was that in other shooters, if you were “not that good at shooting and killing”, you really didn’t have any fun - especially in Call of Duty even with the objective modes.

But Dirty Bomb is really an oddball: A fast-paced shooter where you can actually win the game (or help win the game) even if you had bad aim. And the game can put you very high up on the scoreboard for reasons other than killing things, whereas in most shooters by default… not having laser aim and having wall-jumping skills and a killer K/D should make you appear “Uncompetitive”.

Now for an “Uncompetitive” player like me, I find that I’ve had quite a bit of fun (and quite a bit more success) playing Dirty Bomb almost as if it’s “not really a shooter”. I’ve had wins and some success for example playing Fletcher entirely with just his sticky bombs and the tools and running around the map raiding objectives, or as Aura just setting up a moving outpost together with a Stoker or a Kira and basically having Nerf-gun match like skirmishes here and there. Or how about playing Rhino and just being a mobile turret hose to try and control traffic on a map - I did this once to very good effect on Chapel raining infinite bullets over the EV and just throwing the enemy off balance (I was actually just spraying mini-gun over the EV’s area, the street and the doorways just to rattle opponents. I didn’t kill anyone and my accuracy rating probably fell drastically that match… But I know I helped win the game because when the team hesitated to stand under “Minigun Rainfall” that time (I could see players peeking around the door way then doubling back), the rest of the team who are competitive shooter combatants cut them down and pretty soon it was all over.

That’s just for the three I mainly like to use, but I’m sure there’s other “Ways to use Mercs Competitively for Uncompetitive players” to help turn momentum in a match. Off the bat for example, I think you can be helpful as Nader even if you’re not really that good with any guns because she can be a ready suicide bomber, or Phantom as a body blocker… Essentially using the Mercs for ways to absolutely troll opponents on Offense or Defense even if you’re not a straight shot.

Are there other Mercs and Loadouts some of you would recommend for players who are “Uncompetitive” but would like to be Competitive in terms of the larger game of Dirty Bomb (which is Objectives and Winning Matches)?

Disclaimer: I’m not THAT terrible a shot btw. I can max a Killstreak in COD pretty well, and I’m not a bad operative in R6 or GR. But not all those skills translate in DB, just wanting to explore this “unique flavor” of DB where you can be winning the match even if you’re just a “makeshift soldier” in DB and not one of the thoroughbred killing machines on your team.

well… here are some things you probably know.

you can meat shield someone planting disarming or doing objectives but the error I see many people do is to move when they shield that means the bullet actualy hits the target wich leads to the objectives not being completed.

learn the jumping skills so you can so you can move arround quickly.
you can jump almost anywhere and using long jump to get closer or make yourself a difficult target is a way of doing things.

you can destroy generator with bombs realy quickly as proxy and in dome with stoker(10 or less seconds). you will die but if your team can’t manage to plant a c4 then it is faster to do this.

before someone repairs the ev you can take an ambush route and backstab enemies or at least disrupt them or get the objective(birdge: last point) before the enemie gets there.

if you suck like me at mounted machine guns you can just pre-fire at someone direction he will get out of his cover before the bullets arrive there and get hit or just spam it so they can’t move if you’re in the ev.

don’t waste a molotov or granade or explosive if you don’t need to or need it for something else.

use your abilities as a way to locate enemies when they destroy it.

if your teammates are doing well somewhere you can always watch another place or just do something else or prepare a trap for enemies comming the other way.

try to play aggressively it helps better the aim and awereness of what most people do because of the constant interaction with enemies.

NOTE: keep in mind that most players don’t go aggressive and that while a tactic would work if your teammates where there it wont work because they don’t know how to play aggresively
bassicly timming learn to go aggresive at the good time and you should be able to push a bit more.

Yeah… what you say makes a lot of sense. I too like to just go harass something else if my non-l337 skills are getting me killed somewhere.

I also recently discovered that Bridge does have a lot of “backdoors” but unfortunately not a lot of people know them. A multi-port entry is always helpful against stronger players holed up inside the building with the generator for the barrier.

When it comes to blowing up generators do Proxy and Stoker’s abilities fare better than Fletcher’s?

@TheGreatHoundini to blow generators up, the best merc is arty when you can (trainyard chapel and dome), then Nader/stoker,then fletcher then proxy. But stickies bounce off generators so you must aim near it.

When you meat shield someone, you can straff to make the merc behind you harder to hit, not to make you harder to hit. You must be an easy target so the enemy will kill you in place of the objective specialist. If you stand still, the enemy can see the merc behind through your legs or in a hole and shoot him, if you move a little then he can’t aim at the merc behind you.

These are interesting tips.

I discovered one more last night… Apparently NOT firing your gun can be a form of Stealth in DB… When you get to that frantic part of a match where “Everybody seems to be shooting everybody”… as the one not conjuring muzzle flares you can become “less visible”… allowing you to just make off with the objective.

I topped a scoreboard last night by basically using Fletcher as Solid Snake (with very low K/D numbers too). :stuck_out_tongue:

Two more for the road:

  1. As Fletcher you can stick bombs to your own teammates. Put it on some of the tougher teammates rushing into a room and you can add your explosion to their might during the push if enemies get too close. Needless to say, this requires Friendly Fire to be switched off. Also confuses people to see a “floating walking grenade” when placed on a friendly Phantom.

  2. Ammo Stations can be used to barricade doors. I put one on the doorway near the green dividers in the first part of Bridge on defense. My teammates were picking up ammo while storming through the door, but any attackers trying to make a tight turn to the right and through that door got stuck behind the Ammo Dispenser! That moment of confusion when they get stuck is all you need to get the upper hand to gun’em down.

If you can’t aim, it’s OK… Just jump in and out of cover and fire in the enemies’ general direction with the full intent of retreating back to cover. If they even waste their time looking at your (or better yet looking for you), you’ve just compromised their focus which would have been more appropriate for the “real killers” on your team.

This, I did not know. I think I’m gonna have some fun with my teammates tonight.
