Competitive rank algorithm

(Izzy) #1

Hello,

I tried to get how the competitive rank is working, but I can’t figure it out. I couldn’t find any good topic on this forum nor on wikis outside the forum. So first of all, if someone have a good reference, I d’ be glad to have a look at it.

Now, here is my concern.

From the little info I could get, the rank is only based on your win and losses. I understand that a good carry will find it’s way, but how fair is it really to have your rank based on your team and not on yourself only. You could be by far the best player of your game, but because of a completely anti-productive team, you end up loosing it, and this will affect your rank, am I correct.

Does the game take other aspect to compute the rank, or, in other words: could we have the algorithm behind the rank calculation?

I think no one know how this work exactly.

i can’t tell, because either no one plays or every server is always full in competitive over here in asia servers.

its a team game, you either win with the team or you fall together. same goes for your rank.

It’s pretty unfair if you ask me. It’s also why I don’t do comp without at least 3 people I know.

Seems the better you are the more you’re punished. As a gold 3 it seems that I’m more likely to get thrown on a team full of silvers and vs a team full of gold 2 - cobalt 1 than be thrown onto a team of cobalts and face golds.

So I just don’t bother with it any longer. Only play comp in parties of 3+.

I hope it’s based on personal. I’ve made nearly 20 com games. The first 11 were pretty easy since all were newcomers and I was able to carry my team with a friend who’s decent and managed to get a 9 wins out of 11 games (seriously :cold_sweat:) Got Gold 4 (No idea if it’s any good, but I think more decent than any Silver). After that it was like a bowel examination with a nailed baton. 3 games I got aimboters in the enemies team. 1 game both teams were decent and 5 games we were stomped 4v5 by some high-class guys with me being the only one who got bronze and above (I mean, yeah, skill is more important than loadouts, but who plays a class he only has a lead loadout and can’t play the class at all in comp?)
Based solely on wins would be stupid.

Win. Loss. Thats it. And it has good reasons
It’s pretty unfair if you ask me. It’s also why I don’t do comp without at least 3 people I know.

and this has changed since the last patch.

If you got a group of 3+ (of decent rank), you find no more match cause the search is very narrow.

ATM as cobalt, your only way to find a match is with a party of maximum 3 people, better 2.

So you get tossed together with a bunch of honks, that can ruin the game. But youre also not facing a 5stack that often anymore as solo player…

Its like this in most team based games sadly. Your team can and often will screw you over. Its entirely why I stopped playing MM in league after being a hair away from gold.

Its a little easier to carry in DB then league because of a MOBA’s built in snowball mechanics, but thats not saying much. Its still an absolute pain to get a bunch of… lets be nice and say “comparatively unskilled” players on your team going against people who just absolutely know what their doing.

Running the gambit with randoms is a painful process. There are tricks too it, but still.

I believe that it’s very likely based on wins/loses of your team.
I’ve always played with my friends together in competitive matches and when I first time got a rank from unranked, I jumped directly to the gold 3.
Funny thing is that I didn’t really have yet idea how ranks works in this game and when I got rank gold 2, my friends had to tell me that actually gold 2 is better than gold 3.
(I thought it was worse, lol.)
And now over a month I’ve been stuck with gold 1.
Though now ranking up takes even longer when finding match takes longer time than 20 minutes and even after that we get this as a result:
http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/397801826899614457/0298926BCCCC8DE96E401173B3210A63F3E522FF/
And a reason why I avoided playing with randoms in the comp was the huge problem with leavers. Even if we made a team of 4 players beforehand and went to play with 1 random player, often the only leaver of the team was the random player.
Before the surrender option I simply didn’t see a reason why would I want to play with people who are very likely to leave and has 0 motivation to try to fight back, even when the opponent team happens to be stronger.

You have a secret ELO number. If You win, your variable is going up, If You lose, it’s going down. There is some handicap mechanic so if you lose with players that had better ranks, you’re elo will stay the same or will drop some numbers.

Using strictly wins and losses to determine rank is fine. It would of course be nice if the game could use performance to identify player skill, but this would be incredibly difficult to properly implement. Anything too simple, such as experience earned, won’t be entirely accurate and risks encouraging counterproductive behavior.

Competitive’s problems are much deeper than its ranking algorithm. Properly accounting for groups, leavers, and hackers would be a far more productive use of the devs time. And eventually competitive will need to gain a large player base for any ranking system to do its job. The devs are going to have to get creative to make playing competitive a fun and rewarding experience that players will queue for without being coerced.
