I don’t mind too much as long as it doesn’t feel clunky or like your in an auto pilot. With all the new games it always just feels wrong:
CoD Blackops: Put you in autopilot, if you were close enough it would just direct you to the enemy and slice them up. This was really cool for being a ninja assassin, but a little bit too easy.
BFBC2: A better knife mechanism, the animation was there but it was short. It would fail at times, but from recent titles I’d have to say this was my favorite.
BF3: This has a pretty horrible knifing mechanic imo. It’s cool for the effect it gives aka the enemy will probably **** his pants, but it has way too many downsides. Players tend tell yell out giving you away and it just takes too long. I think on average about 20% of the times I can live longer than 10 seconds after knifing somebody.
W:ET: My favorite thing about this one is it just worked!
Brink: I wasn’t really a fan of the knockdown system, but it was pretty good.
Community Question: Favourite Melee Style
I voted, Quick Strike with melee weapon, then switch back. This gives you another attack, and adds another dimension without more cumbersome keys or buttons to push.
I normally don’t care, as long as it requires timing and there isn’t any “lunge”. But what Humate said makes sense… having to switch to the melee weapon is good since it telegraphs your intention to your opponent.
Dedicated weapon just as in W:ET. At least from my point of view it’s just more appropriate (and oldschool) thing for PC gamers (considering this poll have something to do with upcoming projects and that it’s finally something primary developed for PC).
Only if it auto aims and shoots for me too… I don’t like pressing mouse buttons.
Dedicated weapon and only insta kill in a specific spot and double as gib weapon (well basically like the knife in RtCW/W:ET)
Don’t bring a sword to a gunfight. The question is irrelevant. Melee attacks have no place in FPS games other than backstabs and humiliation attacks. Remember how hard it was to make a good use of flamethrower in RTCW and W:ET ? And that was a weapon with range. It may not fit thematically, but from gameplay point of view flamethrower should be a Covert Op’s weapon, because you need to be a sneaky bastard to use it well. It would be interesting if Strogg Infiltrator had a flamethrower instead of some boring spike.
If I had to choose anything for “melee”, it would be a flamethrower. And if your game has vehicles, mount a flamethrower on it.
A yeah a flamethrower, that’s way more practical than a knife in tactical engagements.
New character: Ninja Berserker, with sword-mounted flamethrower. I seek no patent - you may use this idea SD.
I don’t really care either way so long as it’s balanced.
I just really, really dislike one hit kill melee weapons. I see the knife as a finishing weapon. I would prefer at least 2 hit kills from behind and ET damage from sides and front.
What about best of both? How about the possibility to slap someone 2 or 3 times with your gun equipped? Or, you could swap to your knife and do an instant kill.
