SERIOUSPOST: I kinda can see an attraction to silly temporary unlocks in a multiplayer FPS, like you’re playing an ‘arcade’ mode. Maybe an ET style game with a ‘scrub mode’ for the casuals to get stuck into before they graduate to something a bit more promod?
I do wonder if it’d work for SD to make their base game work, release it and get people playing, and then flesh out ideas rapidly with a mod for their functional and populated game. Use it as an unofficial testbed for prototyping ideas, and then use the knowledge to construct a mod/expansion they can sell with extra maps/gametypes/stuff later on when they’ve iterated through to something that works.
