Community Opinion: The best competitive FPS

(montheponies) #21

What’s the best competitive team PC shooter you’ve ever played?

RTCW. It has a perfect mix of classes, objectives, spawnwaves and maps which combined with excellent gunplay made it a joy to play. I played competivitely mainly 6v6 with some 3v3 as well as on a large scale organised tournament with upto 15v15. One of the main reasons for it’s success was the fact that the community were able to make maps and mods. Essentially you had Shrub for pub play and OSP for Competition (along with a lot of others mods). This meant that there was a range of gametypes and maps to suit a wide variety of tastes. As an example I would routinely come off a stressful comp match and jump onto shrub Tram just to ‘relax’.

What’s the best competitive team PC shooter out there right now?
CSGO probably. I’ve played only a few select games competitively since RTCW, but nothing as seriously, partly cos I’m getting older and cant commit the time, but moreover because the games around just now don’t have the same hook. This isnt helped by everyone now jumping on the DLC bandwagon.

 1. ET:QW, with all ngeative things like ****ty engene and netcode, it was first game which i start play seriously, before and after etqw i play many games, but etqw always will be #1 in my heart
 2. Atm i play Xonotic, can’t call it best fps game, but it’s pretty funny and fast arena shooter with nice community.

what i’ve played

 1. Quakeworld. its raw, its deadly, and its fun.
 2. ETQW. best gaming times in my life - 2007-2009 years were entirely filled with this laggy ghost-hitting piece of awesomeness!! :DDD
 3. Quakelive. most casual veriosn of q3 but it is still very entertaining.

what i haven’t play srsly:

 1. ET. played only like a hundred matches after etqw started to choke. it was very enjoyable.
 2. CPMA. insane skill and pace. from the spectator’s point of view its just magic a-la Ronaldinio tricks.
 3. Team fortress (q1) its raw, its deadly, and its fun…oh wait…:DDD

What’s the best competitive team PC shooter you’ve ever played?
W:ET/CoD4, mainly because of the reasons below. Most of the stuff applies to ET as well.

What’s the best competitive team PC shooter out there right now?
This is still Call of Duty 4 for me, because for the PC it’s still fast, you really have the feeling you are controlling your character in the detail. In the newer series it feels like you have more distance because their is some delay in movement. Besides that, CoD4 is still more active than any other cod in means of competitive play, because of the awesome mod support. Without a promod (competition mod) it would be dead by now.

This description fits me too, + W:ET/ETQW (competitively, not on any spectacular levels though).

If I had more freetime, I would probably have played L4D & L4D2 in teams/matches, because I really like that game, and I can imagine that it would have been a great team/match game for me personally.

What makes these games great team-based competitive online shooters? Movement, speed, lack of random elements (few stupid random deaths), excellent maps, great weapon mechanics (the mix/settings of rate of fire, spread, accuracy et cetera) and good UI’s. And more.

Hey Crispy,
What’s the reason coming with this now? I mean isn’t this something you should’ve done long before?
Cheers
Hey Crispy,
What’s the reason coming with this now? I mean isn’t this something you should’ve done long before?
Cheers
To be clear, these questions aren’t coming from Design; I am not primarily responsible for design decisions, so don’t read too much into these. Jonny_Hex, Anti & Smooth are the designers on the game.

However, as Lead Production Tester, I have a duty to understand the game we’re making and the community we’re making it for. These questions are to help me personally get a really good understanding for:
A) the current competitive PC FPS scene (I’ve been out of the loop since the early '00s and it would be arrogant to assume it hadn’t changed since then)
B) to get a good feeling for the competitive side of the Extraction community
& C) they’re also useful to validate my own opinions when giving internal feedback on the game as it evolves

Regardless, your thoughts are always of interest to the designers and everyone else working on the game!

P.S. I was working on Arkham Origins: Online up until recently.

Best competitive I’ve played:
TDM - Call Of Duty 1 - Make a bad move, your team will end up in a spawn rape, simple as that. Maps were great for it, not overly large but not cramped in any way either. The hit registration in this game was also one of the best I’ve ever experienced. One of the last games in the genre not to have a random spawn system implemented as far as I can tell. Also, the guns in this game was so balanced it’s insane.

TDM - Call Of Duty 2 - Took what COD1 lacked in SD and improved it. ADS while jumping improved the speed. Health regen improved the speed. Turned down the bounciness of the grenades, added a smoke which was crucial to use on certain maps, good visibility.
* Granted, both of these relied on third party mods to be effective but damn they were good.

OBJ - Team Fortress 2 - If you look passed the obsurd amount of items, hats, and all that you have a game with huge potential. The classes are really defined, both in what they do and how they look. None of them seem overpowered, most of the maps work in a competitive environment with the restrictions and rules that comes with it. It’s awesome that Valve have stepped in and starting supporting the competitive scene but I fear it’s too little, too late.

Quake series - I have never been any good at it but the entertainment it provides is just insane. I’d like to think of it as the SC of the FPS genre. Even if you might not like to play it, or have played it for that matter, most people actually really enjoy watching good dudes play it.

Best competitive out there right now:
Shootmania
Quake Live
Counter-Strike: Global offensive
Team Fortress 2

1. What’s the best competitive team PC shooter you’ve ever played?

ET and ETQW, if I had only one choice I would say ETQW.

2. What’s the best competitive team PC shooter out there right now?

CS:GO

I prefer watching (which I even often do) over playing myself, because it’s not really my cup of tea. But it involves a lot of teamwork and tactics.

(Kendle) #31

Best ever = DOD (Day of Defeat), sorry to say much as I loved RTCW, and ET to almost the same extent, I have to be honest with myself and say I’m a DOD player at heart, played it more hours than all other games I’ve played put together, and had the most fun and satisfying times playing it when it was active.

Best now = no idea, don’t play anything anymore, but I’d guess CS:GO is a good start, the CS version I’ve enjoyed playing the most and I’ve always appreciated the tactics and teamwork necessary to play one life per round games properly.

Almost gave you neg rep for that
Hey guys, I have a couple of questions I’d like to hear from you on.

[ol]
[li]What’s the best competitive team PC shooter you’ve ever played?
[/li][li]What’s the best competitive team PC shooter out there right now?
[/li][/ol]

Naturally I’m not just interested in the answers, I’m really interested in why you feel this way about these particular games. I’ve left the questions deliberately broad to accommodate for a wide range of opinions. Perhaps you liked the first Planetside, perhaps you think a particular TDM. The four key parts are that it’s a team multiplayer, it has a strong element of shooter gameplay (could be 1st or 3rd-person, but not an arcade shooter, ofc!), you played it on PC and it was played competitively.

I’m interested in what elements you feel make/made it great. Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts! :)
Hey Crispy, please bare in mind I may be a little biased

Natural Selection 1 was the best competitive FPS I have played. It had a large scene, at one point I think around 100 teams were actively playing which is pretty solid. The had two asymmetric sides which offered unique gameplay, and the competitive matches at the top level were often tight win or lose. Of course I played for the top teams in all of the major versions, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt.

CS:GO I believe is the best competitive PC FPS out right now. CS classic gameplay has intense moments of action, followed by a pause, with maybe a duel or two at the end of the round. A single player can ace a team with a single magazine in most guns, making it possible however unlikely that a player can beat an entire team. This player empowerment is important to team play as well as getting individuals invovled.

When most potential players pick up a new game, they are often not associated with any team or clan, they figure “hey this looks fun let me check it out” Heavy team based PvP Ala Global Agenda and FireFall (RIP PVP) are difficult to get into by one’s self due to higher TTK. The player is disempowered, while an over-emphasis on teamwork in pubs are rewarded greatly.

Thats what I hope for SD, that one player in the right cirumstances can ace a team, however it would be unlikely. Clutch saves and wins will attract players and spectators. Having the underdog win once and a while is very reinforcing for entry level and casual players, which the game needs desperately to survive and be profitable. Seeing a pro player ace another pro team is so of the most impressive gameplay I have ever seen in gaming. I remember one guy from SK in CS 1.6 beat an entire team with a single USP magazine, they had automatic weapons during a CT save round. To me as seldom as it is, is worth playing for over and over and over again to try to get that moment (and victory as well  )

That is what I think makes a great game in general. Great games are often great competitive games as well.

No disrespect to the W:ET crowd, but I never played that game competitively so I can’t comment, but it certainly looks fun from the videos I have seen.

you forgot to say that firefall simply sucks.the weaponaiming is crap because with the jetpacks the explosive weapon shots are luckbased, because you cant predict what the enemy is planing. firefall has no movement and is freaking slow, your char has an jebpack but he still feels like a stone.
the gamemodes feel slow ,the maps are uninspired… and its pay to win

i still say CS is overrated.it was very hyped at his time and build this way a huge fanbase.but its so sloooooooooooooooow
always when i play 1 hr or smth i ask myself how bad cs players must be :/.because they hit less than i ?

 1. What’s the best competitive team PC shooter you’ve ever played?

The best competitive shooter I played was probably Tribes 1 (5v5). It was fast paced and very skillful. It required teamwork, but also allowed for amazing cowboy moments. I also had a lot of fun playing ETQW at a competitive level. Despite all the limitations the game had, the core gameplay was truly fun. Its a shame it took so long for the game to be fully patched and a promod to come out. Nowadays, even more so than when ETQW was released, a competitive game needs polish, and the proper competitive tools in place at launch, or people will simply move on to the next game.

 1. What’s the best competitive team PC shooter out there right now?

There really is a huge void in PC FPS right now. CSGO probably has the best numbers and the most tournaments right now. But for me personally, I’d never play it. Holding angles and controlling spread by shooting at the floor to get headshots just seems innately boring and unappealing to me. I’ve watched a fair number of CSGO matches and one can respect the polish the game has, as well as a good spectator mod. Just by looking at Twitch numbers, PC FPSes are nowhere to be seen.

 1. Hands down ET or RtCW.

 2. Wouldn’t know, don’t really follow new games.

Obviously personal opinion, but I still play Clan Arena in Quake Live regularly… absolutely love it and probably will till it’s closed down.

I may get flamed or shot for blasphemy here, but I think I’d like to try CoD TDM or S&D in a proper clan environment as long as the comp mode shut off the ****ty ‘revenge spawn’. CoD is my opposite for QL for when I want to slow things down a bit.

(chump) #40

Tribes 1 (1998). I guess its the opposite for me. Or maybe I associate more with tribes 1 players, but its heavily weighted in Tribes’ favor from the people I know.
