Hey guys, I have a couple of questions I’d like to hear from you on.

[li]What’s the best competitive team PC shooter you’ve ever played?
[/li][li]What’s the best competitive team PC shooter out there right now?
[/li][/ol]
Naturally I’m not just interested in the answers, I’m really interested in why you feel this way about these particular games. I’ve left the questions deliberately broad to accommodate for a wide range of opinions. Perhaps you liked the first Planetside, perhaps you think a particular TDM. The four key parts are that it’s a team multiplayer, it has a strong element of shooter gameplay (could be 1st or 3rd-person, but not an arcade shooter, ofc!), you played it on PC and it was played competitively.
I’m interested in what elements you feel make/made it great. Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts! :)
Hey Crispy, please bare in mind I may be a little biased
Natural Selection 1 was the best competitive FPS I have played. It had a large scene, at one point I think around 100 teams were actively playing which is pretty solid. The had two asymmetric sides which offered unique gameplay, and the competitive matches at the top level were often tight win or lose. Of course I played for the top teams in all of the major versions, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt.
CS:GO I believe is the best competitive PC FPS out right now. CS classic gameplay has intense moments of action, followed by a pause, with maybe a duel or two at the end of the round. A single player can ace a team with a single magazine in most guns, making it possible however unlikely that a player can beat an entire team. This player empowerment is important to team play as well as getting individuals invovled.
When most potential players pick up a new game, they are often not associated with any team or clan, they figure “hey this looks fun let me check it out” Heavy team based PvP Ala Global Agenda and FireFall (RIP PVP) are difficult to get into by one’s self due to higher TTK. The player is disempowered, while an over-emphasis on teamwork in pubs are rewarded greatly.
Thats what I hope for SD, that one player in the right cirumstances can ace a team, however it would be unlikely. Clutch saves and wins will attract players and spectators. Having the underdog win once and a while is very reinforcing for entry level and casual players, which the game needs desperately to survive and be profitable. Seeing a pro player ace another pro team is so of the most impressive gameplay I have ever seen in gaming. I remember one guy from SK in CS 1.6 beat an entire team with a single USP magazine, they had automatic weapons during a CT save round. To me as seldom as it is, is worth playing for over and over and over again to try to get that moment (and victory as well
)
That is what I think makes a great game in general. Great games are often great competitive games as well.
No disrespect to the W:ET crowd, but I never played that game competitively so I can’t comment, but it certainly looks fun from the videos I have seen.
