Community Ideas For Maps +A Little Bit of Game Modes [A few Pictures, You Were Warned]

(solace_) #1

Hey Everyone,

I think most people can agree that maps are some of the most important part of any game and that Dirty Bomb has been lacking in this department. The maps that they have currently are good (Even Dome, sue me. Although it does need maybe a bit more work) and it would be nice to see some new ones.

The maps that are currently in Progress are Gallery and Dockyard. Gallery caters to a variety of play styles and Dockyard is heavily long ranged focused (although not impossible to use close range mercs).

My question is, what kind of maps do you people want to see in the future? Close quarters? Wide open? Large? Small? Linear? Lane based? There have been a lot of good posts here about what maps could be made and also that the location of the game should be taken advantage of which is true. London has a lot of iconic locations around central London and still more if you venture even a little bit outside of city.

For me personally, I think it would be great to see some more maps with verticality and different objectives than just C4, EV escort, etc. Dirty Bomb has a great wall running mechanic and it would be nice to see more maps take advantage of this. Whether in a residential or commercial area (or a combinations of the two), I think it would be nice to see maps with buildings close together with accessible roofs and interiors. Of course if they went down this sort of route, the map in general would have to be smaller so as to keep the action fairly constant. Think of Favela from MW2, that is the KIND of verticality I am talking about. That being said, I do mean that a Favela based map should be put into the game, that map wasn’t designed in the greatest way and the devs would obviously have to choose something that suits the environment and play style of Dirty Bomb.

What about actual locations though?

Tower bridge area and the bridge itself would make for an excellent objective map or “siege” style map. It could be a EV escort (jackals or CDA trying to get something across the bridge). Or point capture, map starts with one neutral point in the middle which both teams must fight for, when the point falls to one team, the team that lost must retreat and defend their next point. The entire map could have 5-7 points (say 3 for each team at the start + one neutral). That would be a sort of tug of war objective mode and they could even mix in some side objectives. Not to mention there would be multiple routes to get across the bridge, both on the bridge itself and above.

Westminster Bridge is another option of the same story. Maybe the CDA is trying to protect the parliament buildings from the Jackals, so they are defending the bridge but when their defences fail they must retreat inside the buildings to prevent them from placing explosives. This map would be quite close to where Terminal is located I believe.

As you can see, there could be the main route above and then some added walkways floating on the water underneath the bridge.

Another Bridge (I know, Im going heavy on the bridges), is the Millennium Bridge and surrounding Area.

This one would be much more narrow and focus on “head to head” combat. Again, the surrounding areas and buildings could be used as other objectives or the first objective and then the two teams must fight over the bridge.

The shard could be another location for a map. The two teams would fight over the ground floor and then if the map proceeds to the second objective, one of the teams must capture a point for a certain amount of time in order to bring in the helicopter for picking up something. There is a lot of leeway here again in terms of objectives and such.

A train station style map could be Paddington Station (could be implemented when ‘Bear’ (new merc) comes out, Im super hyped). This would offer something very similar to terminal, but perhaps most of the map and objectives could be inside of the terminal. CDA must stop Jackals from stealing train or something like that. There could be multiple routes on ground level as well as tunnels below the tracks.

While Im on to train stations, may as well talk King’s Cross. There is a lot of similar potential here. Stealing train, blowing up train, point capture; there is load of options and potential here.

Also, the outside could be incorporated.

The BBC Broadcasting House could be another location. Perhaps the CDA is using it as a base of operations and communications. The jackals are trying to capture the building from the CDA for their own use. It would provide a lot of multi layered vertical gameplay as well as multiple stages for the game to progress through.

So I mentioned gamemodes in the title, and I will just summarize my thoughts and what I have said throughout the post.

Tug-of-War - Two teams battle it out over 5-7 capture points where both teams start with three CP’s and there is one neutral one in the middle of the map. Good for more linear style maps, but verticality could be implemented.

Siege - One team must siege the others base, to win, the attacking team must capture the base completely by completing multiple objectives such as C4, point capture, etc.

So, wow. That was a long post. I hope you liked it and got something out of it. I also hope that the devs see this. I’m not trying to tell them what to make, these are just suggestions for the devs for future maps and game modes. I just think it would be great to see some variety implemented into the game .

Please leave your thoughts below on the ideas I have come up with as well as your own thoughts on what future maps could be. Seeya!

I just read a bit of the post again and realized at the end it sounded like I said that I was trying to tell the devs what to make. QUITE the opposite, I would never be so presumptuous.

Anyways, I hope you liked the post, it was fun to think of.

Who is this bear you speak of? I’m intrigued

oh haha, you’ve spotted it. It was a joke because you know Paddington station and Paddington bear? Yeah, that’s it.

Although a merc called bear could be interesting. Maybe a tank, melee character?
