Communication in Pub - Execution rooms. What has been your experience so far?

(DatAssparagus) #1

Hey everyone!

This was one of my matches last night and needless to say, the communication was absolutely fantastic.

Execution - Market - Pub Comms

What has been your experience so far with the in game communications? I’ve heard some people express frustration over individual player volumes being tied to master game volume.

I believe planetside had it so that you’re able to hit +/- on your numpad to increase/decrease the current talkers voice.
Would be neato if we had that.

I get insults cause I am level 46.
I don’t attempt to communicate anymore. Not worth my trouble since most players there are lvl 1-8.

People will get frustrated easily if they’re being stomped by a high level. Its akin to being one upped by someone who has paid money to get a upper hand. Except in your case its your time spent. Your knowledge of the game, how to trace heads, positioning, game sense, will trump theirs 9.99 times out of 10.

This is where their frustrations stem from and there isn’t much you are able to do about it besides gimping yourself/not try harding in pubs or playing with people more at your skill level.

If you go into pubs expecting people to enjoy having you there you either need to be the pope or be spectating, and even then you never know when someone might yap. :frowning:

@Haise I know the feeling. I turn off my mic and all comms unless I’m in a level 10+ server, but even then, 90% of the time I regret it, lmao.

Poor. I tell my teammates that enemies are going to A and they decide to defend B because… reasons! … I guess I shouldn’t be surprised considering I’ve seen plenty of times when when enemy have planted on A and my teammates go check B… “they have planted on site A!” “site A? Hmm… I better go check site B… … hmm… this is weird… it’s not in site B… did the bomb go invisible? I don’t get it”

I generally don’t use my mic in pubs, I do use it extensively in comp though.

I just can’t be bothered with it in pubs while, for example, the whole team is Proxies and jumping to their deaths all the time, or 2/3 are off playing tdm while the EV is sitting unrepaired with not a soul near by.

My experience is that communication in Execution comes 90% from me to my teammates. Every now and again another experienced player will lead or even better we’ll have a real dialogue. But most players are relatively new and will either passively follow the plan or completely ignore everything and do whatever they want.

I will also note that I’ve almost never seen mics used successfully for communication (I personally never use one). It’s bad enough that the default volume settings make it impossible to hear/understand anyone on a mic, but even with the volume adjusted a very small percentage of players actually talk loudly enough to be understood. I’m not sure if this is a problem with how the game handles mics or just that few players know how to use one properly.

There is also unfortunately a fair amount of ragers and an even greater amount of rage-quitters. With all types of players thrown into the same servers stomps are extremely common. It often takes just one good player to carry a team or a few newbies to sink a team. The moronic “Win X Rounds” missions significantly increase the problems. Players with this mission will never hold back when on the superior team and will often rage and/or quit a losing team.

Having been a vocal platoon leader in Planetside I’ve always taken initiative to coordinating team movements.

The phrases matter just as much as how loudly you say them. Voice maturity is also a very important aspect to this. Adults are less prone to listen to the squeaky mouse in the room.

Some phrases I use often:

[] Go A/B at the start of the match.
[
] Fallback to -insert location-
[] Rotate to B through mid
[
] Lockdown A/B
[] Plant the C4/Cover the C4
[
] Hold positions/Regroup
[] # in/on -map location-
[
] -Medic class- go -location-

Bunch more I can’t remember atm.

I’ve found that people generally do follow my directions. There will be the odd time where I’m tired so I wont speak up loudly and people don’t hear me so they don’t listen. Theres also the odd times where everyone is foreign and won’t understand me. Its happened once before and I was very confused after being told that I’m a “Son of a bitch” in korean after saying “Cover the C4”

Shooters don’t work with pub team voice. Even if it’s 100% helpful and brief information, it’s still unasked for. On the other hand, games like Left4Dead were always very receptive of voice chat, to the point where almost everyone used it.

Instead I’ll just do callouts in chat for which side the attackers are on, and if I die I’ll spectate others and use their view to share some more detailed info. Not like I’m doing anything else. Reception relates directly to the level of scrubness. Players who’re already good will respond well to chat. Players who’re awful will most of the time ignore it.

And also, the most annoying thing over voice chat is if people are being caption obvious. Nobody needs to be told to cover the C4.

(DatAssparagus) #10

Theres been times when the C4 has been at 2/3rds ready to blow (still within defuse time) with 4 defenders and an attacking stoker next to it with a moly ready but not throwing it.

Thats when I usually call to cover the c4 and they have. Also followed with a nice call ass.

Which actually now that I look back, could’ve been him calling me an ass? D: we’ll never know

(MuhQ) #11

It’s alright, I often start to talk a lot and others join me, I think it has made some players to play more as a team so that’s good.

(HonourBound) #12

I can sum it up in 2 phrases

“ok guys go right this time, you’ve all gone left and got stomped for the past 4 rounds”

team goes right

:worried:

(DatAssparagus) #13

Yea, there was a match where we were near the end of the game when I spoke up once and said,

“Lets go A this round.”

and next thing you the other 6 team mates I had all said “Yea”, “okay”, “sounds good” in voice chat. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Ctrix) #14

Mic quality goes a looong way. You can’t overstate sound quality.
Though, usually third party software like Dirty Bomb has terrible encoding so it’s like, whatever you do you sound like a toaster.

(DatAssparagus) #15

It really does. I’m looking for a good mic to get because my headset has a semi-broken mic on it. T_T any recommendations?

I’ve definitely heard my share of horrendous sounding toasters/demon hell spawns.

(Mr-Penguin) #16

My experience in chat:
Me- Go to A!
Everybody goes to B and gets promptly slaughtered

I don’t even bother trying, especially because I only play the mode for an extra 500 credits.

(Ctrix) #17

Everyone I’ve ever heard talking about this has said the Blue Yeti is the end all of sound quality. You’ll only need a better one if you’re a professional, and even professionals use the Blue Yeti. Practically every Twitch streamer is using it. But of course there’s alternatives, I just don’t know them.

(DatAssparagus) #18

I’ll look into it, thanks Ctrix.

(SereneFlight) #19

A little late and go go necro but day or two after making the that joke about bomb going invisible, I found out that there was a bug in the game that made the bomb go invisible… yeah…
/tots not worth of necro but there you go

(HunterAssassin5) #20

my experience:

 1. (complete silence)
 2. [in execution defense] THEY WENT RIGHT/LEFT!
 3. [in execution offense] i guess we’ll go right/left this round.
 4. (listening to butthurt when the people are having difficulties doing the obj and someone thinks they arent trying)
