Command maps

(Victorianetza) #1

i searched the forums & i couldnt find the thread i needed… so i decided to make a new one, hopefully someone will answer

the questions…

  1. I have a tracemap. ITs yellow & black. How to make it look like in other maps (to look normal, i mean to look lith different colors like in gold & fueldump)

  2. I have an underground bunker which doesnt show up on the tracemap. How to make it appear? is there a way, or i should draw it (with approximent size)…

i think there are mappers who need this kind of info… theres at least 1 :bored:

PS. If someone explains about ? #1, i add that i use Adobe Photoshop CS & Image Ready CS

the tutorials by schaffer show how to do it… which program you use doesn’t matter - the procedure will be almost the same.
with photoshop i used the posterize filter after smoothening the terrain a bit, then selecting the different levels with the
magic wand tool, copying them each onto a new layer. there you can easily apply outline (stroke) and color overlay to
your terrain levels.

I’ll start working with Photoshop at some stage. I bought a copy of Photoshop 7 just before christmas but havn’t had a chance to play much. From what I saw it seemed pretty simillar to Paint Shop Pro, just different menu layouts and slightly different titles. Some other differences but the tuts should be pretty portable (I hope)

i see… i looked for a post like thore’s - which effects to apply, sample procedure… i will try it… hopefully i will get a nice looking result

but still the #2 remains… how to make a tracemap underneath theTerrain? is there a way to do it? or if there aint, u draw it approximently?

I usually dont draw any underground stuff since I think the maps should look topographical. Here are the alternatives:

  1. Create a copy of the .map file. open this in GTK and delete all the terrain and then compile and create a trace map. This would presumably show the bunker.

  2. Setup a script to toggle the display of the command map on screeen so that you can get it to remain constantly. Then stand in each corner and take a screenshot. Cut out the overlaid command map and rezise to the actual size of your command map and use this to work out almost exact (uhh and oxy moron) positioning of the underground structures.

  3. Guess. Probably best to close your eyes and draw with the air brush tool  :moo: (Just kidding)

Hope that helps. If still in trouble then PM me and maybe I can help you out

BTW, I’m currently working on redoing the tuts since they where never finished and I was in the process of changing the way I do command maps when I was doing the tuts so they are a fair bit of the old and a little bit of the new. Hope to do about half of it this weekend.

Thats what they did for the official maps but in reverse. They deleted all buildings so they could get nice mooth terrain
