classes vs objectives

the biggest gripe i have with this game, although i do enjoy it, is that the mechanic of leveling and gaining skills is counter-intuitive to the idea that you need specific class to complete an objective.

i have 2 characters currently, one is an engy and one is a med. if i am on either one, i am reluctant to change class because i would have a distinct disadvantage over players playing dedicated classes. yet, often i find myself on a team that has no one playing the class needed for the objective.

i do not see this as the same as having a 3 map campaign and an ability to gain skill levels within that, like the previous 2 sd games. for one, you keep 2 out of the 3 skills no matter what class you swap to. also, you got usefull things when you leveled up, rather than something you generally needed, like sprint+gren/reload.

i am not against the idea of customizing your toon, but you would almost need skill trees within classes to make it of any use. not to bring WOW into the discussion, but rambo med/pure med/suicide med would almost seem to make sense. as it stands, players are just reverting to deathmatch because they dont want to change to a lvl 0 soldier just to blow something up.

Just make a hybrid soldier for pub play or general play, aka make a character with abilities across the board.
Then try and make some friends or join a clan and when you play a character with a more specific ability set, because then you can depend on your teammates.

not a bad idea, but it doesnt really address the issue. I could do that, but when you have 7 other players sticking to their buffed class, the objective has one gimped toon lemminging(??) at it.

peoplw do change to lev0 class to complete a objective. and teams with such players win.

i have only one character… couldn´t figure out why to have another, if this one fits my playstyle. but when there´s something to hack and noone does…ihack, same with others.
whats the sens of having a character thats leveled up in all classes? then you could get rid of all the custimasations.

Get rid of what? Anyway, the reason to have a hybrid character is because it allows you to fill the required role at all times and not be gimped while doing it. This allows the rest of your team to play to their strengths while you complete the objectives. Besides, it’s better than using a level zero character to do the same thing.

Each Class has the base requirements to achieve the Objective, whether it is Hacking, Repairing, Healing, Planting HE. A level 1 character can get it done. Then there are abilities as you level that enhance your character’s ability to help your team. I think there would be a legitimate gripe if you had to level up just to complete objectives. But as it stands now, each base character can complete an objective at any time. I will change class to get an objective done. But when coordinating with my squad prior to the start of a match, it is far more effective to fill out your team and roles especially against an 8 man team.

this is the point isn’t it? why do i have to chose a wholly different character, which i cant select other than at the main menu, to take advantage of the ability system?

I agree with this, you should be able to change between caracters without the need to leave the server and rejoin.

If you want a team with organised members then take a look at TAW at taw.net. We have a diverse group of players who play all the classes. I currently have 4 characters dedicated to each class all at lvl 20. At the moment I play Soldier a lot but there are medics and engineers and even operatives in the team.

I can see what you mean about people not wanting to change but if your with an organsied team like TAW then that wont happen. Basicly we all support each other in our roles whether that be buffing reviving, getting the obj done or just covering a teammate while he takes a command post or does the obj.

i have 2 level 20 characters:

medic/op and soldier/engi.

both of those have the best abilities for their classes. i know what you mean though. every time i play the soldier/engi we have no medics on the team, so i used a couple of ability points to add self revive and metabolism.

i found these 2 the setups the best as i can attack/defend with both characters and i always have at least 1 decent option available.

i still think that changing character between maps might be a decent idea. i hate swapping characters as it often means you cant get back on the same server

Pretty much every single character of mine is a hyrbid… because you can’t physically not spend points on just one class without having some left over. So I balance it out, so I’m a little more open to changing classes. I don’t even find I have to change that often, because human players are fairly balanced with their choice or preference in class, and bots do a passable job of getting stuff done anyway.

to be honest i will most likely make another character that is just a jack of all trades. some abilities are just a waste of space (maybe use them every 5 or 6 maps). nothing worse than taking in your great soldier/engi and needing a medic/op, which you have no abilities bought for

Max level is 20. Each class can equip at most 3 abilities, and there are 4 classes. So you can build a hybrid character by spending 12 points. Less if you share some universal abilities.

If the “agents of change” DLC comes out, you’ll have 24 points to divide mong 4 classes. Up to 6 class-specific abilities. That’s enough if you know what you need.

This is what I feel as well. But you can create a beast of a hybrid instead

Mmmh, all passive abilities don’t count on the equipment max, and they are a hell usefull!
1 class is not just 3 equipped abilities
