Classes, are they happening?

As a long time Wolfenstein ET player, I would love to see mercs being grouped into classes… eventually.
Currently I don’t think it is exactly needed, but it would probably be useful to newer players just because when you find the class you prefer the most, you might want to try another merc of the same class or invest in a merc from other class to fill the roles.

Also it would be easier to classify the cases to reduce the RNG chances of getting an unwanted merc loadout.

Lets start off what the classes would be coming from ET with the current mercs:

Soldier - Fragger / Nader / Rhino
Medic - Aura / Phoenix / Sawbonez / Sparks
Engineer - Bushwhacker / Fletcher / Proxy
Field Ops - Arty / Kira / Skyhammer
Covert Ops - Phantom / Redeye / Vassili

Now I think it would be great if the community could come up with different names for the classes to suit this game better and who knows, maybe some dev might actually read this post and pick a name for a class suggested by you!

My classes would be called:

Combat - because their abilities are essentially crowd control, as in, they can clear out/hold down an area
Medic - it’s just too common to change I guess
Technician - I’m really used to engineer and “objective specialist” feels too long
Assault - artillery/airstrike/orbital laser??? better find some cover
Recon - stealth armor to infiltrate back lines, infrared goggles/heartbeat sensor to locate the enemies

I know, nothing original, but the servers are down for maintenance so I had nothing better to do.

Well, they are all categorized like this in Dirty Bomb (not 100% sure those names are official but it’s what everyone has been using).

Assault- Fragger / Nader / Rhino
Medic - Aura / Phoenix / Sawbonez / Sparks
Engineer - Bushwhacker / Fletcher / Proxy
Fire Support - Arty / Kira / Skyhammer
Recon - Phantom / Redeye / Vassili

And unreleased but currently known to exist mercs:

Assault- Thunder
Medic - ALL DONE
Engineer - Turtle
Fire Support - Stoker
Recon - Aimee

Yeah, this is pretty much already a thing!

Being able to help up, plant and disarm doesn’t negate the fact that they still have their class rolls to perform, as they perform them better than others that aren’t in their field of expertise.

It’s possible that it’s not conveyed too well to the average newbie that each merc does have a distinct class which I think needs to be put across in the menu screen a little better.

It is indeed, but the UI could do a better job at communicating this. IMO they should be divided into these groups when selecting, browsing and buying mercs. Would be so much easier. Maybe even color code the portrait boarders too.

Been playing this game for 2 months now and rarely do I hear anyone refer to a merc by role/class + Skyhammer being a free merc, as long as they aren’t level 10+ I really can’t expect any ammo from them as if they don’t know it’s an ability their class has.

I would love to see the portrait borders with some symbol or color coded. Nice suggestion.

People aren’t that dumb not to see if they have ammo as an ability. If you need some, ask for it via quickchat. They can’t smell if you need ammo and only get visual feedback if you’re very low on ammo.

Thats the problem, I can ask via voicechat/spam the quickchat, run in their face with only melee since out of ammo and all the bullets I get is from them shooting at me :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s just because Skyhammer is one of the free mercs and he is rather easy to get in to, so the new players might often forget about the abilities completely.
(+ underground last spawn on defense, reaching that closest ammo crate near the elevator with only a knife is rather horrible, maybe unless you’re a Phantom  maybe)[/left]

I just kinda wish non-engineers c4 plants were a little bit slower. That 2 second difference between proficient and non-proficent just doesn’t seem big enough to warrant always taking an engineer on offense.

I would really enjoy merc slot for every class because now you cant take 2 classes into game

I think you’re being a bit over dramatic here, it’s a lot more than 2 seconds difference between engie and non-engie defuse/plant times.

Yes, classes are happening!

(Demolama) #14

Yes, diffuse is a big difference- nonproficient (8 seconds) vs proficient (4 seconds). On the other hand planting is only 2 seconds difference between a nonproficient (5 seconds) and proficient (3 seconds) merc.

Thus, my statement still stands… I think 2 second differences is not enough to warrant an engineer on offense sometimes

(DarkangelUK) #15

With the defender bias I’d say increasing the non-proficient time even longer would cause even more attacker grief if you don’t have an engineer on your team.

I believe it’s really 5 and 7 seconds.

Dare I say it but Overwatch is doing it right and they have their mercs separated by class type
