Class Tag in-game [Suggestion]

(ZaZa) #1

Hello there Mercs!

One thing, which I believe would help new players to understand DB better in order to play DIRTY, is that you could see in-game what classes each player’s merc belongs to directly on each merc’s skin.

It is because in DB there is 23 mercs and 5 classes (Recon, Fire Support, Medic, Engineer and Assualt) and each individual of the team plays of course each role in a team, because this is team-based FPS game, and understanding your augments on your loadouts cards and abilities attached to each merc is crucial if you want to improve your game and so on team working.

So by having this kind of class-tag it could help new players to get what they should do (with reservation for all on the team are new players) and also some kind of text showing what class you are.

Quick example: - The tag would be smaller and better obviously.

See in 1080/60

Also you could yourself see which merc you are playing and what class it is:

And of course there should be an option if you don’t want it there, the location I thought quickly of is that red boxed one, which you can see in the picture above.

As long as you could disable it I’d say go for it. For experienced players having a piece of text on their screen at all times is pretty distracting, and with a small merc in the distance it might be hard to tell what merc that is, since merc body shape is a great indicator of who you’re looking at.

It’s worth noting though that not every merc fits perfectly into their categories. Seeing a recon tag over phantom might confuse players who are used to seeing that tag given to snipers. Same with guardian, who might expect her to heal.

Also on another note, it might be a good idea to make mousing over a teammate while waiting in spawn show a quick piece of information about them in a bubble over them. I might photoshop an example together later, but you get what I mean. Just to show new players who they’re fighting with and all.

  • Exactly, agreed, therefore absolutely such option is needed that you enable / disable it, agreed.
  • Yeah true that, also , as an engineer you can repair obviously faster, but others can also repair, but somehow I think, having that tag there, would somehow give more understanding to how it all works, at least what I think.
  • Ah, yes, I get you, that’d be also good.

I don’t really see the point of this. The tags would basically just be signifying what class a merc is in, which doesn’t mean anything to you until you need something from that merc, like ammo or heals. Knowing that Phantom is a recon doesn’t matter in-game, knowing what Phantom can DO matters in-game. If you run past a friendly Fragger and it says “Assault” over him on your HUD, what would you do in that situation? A new player would probably say “Oh, this is an assault merc. And?”
The tags could be detrimental, too, in some situations. Cluttering the HUD with more stuff is already a bad idea, no matter how small the tags are. If you make the tags small enough to the point where you can barely see them, then that would just defeat the purpose of even having them. Not to mention what seeing someone playing a merc labeled “Medic” running around brutally beating people to death with a cricket bat would do to a newer player. I’m not trying to say that new players are a bunch of infants who learn entirely by experience, most players probably know what a medic is, but if they see playing medic as solo fraggers who only use heals as a method to keep themselves alive, their learning process might be skewed a hwee bit.
I don’t want to say it’s a hindrance in the long run, because you don’t have to turn it off if it’s optional, so it’s not like you have to get the training wheels ripped off because the training wheels don’t really slow you down, in the long run. But, it wouldn’t really serve a purpose, in my opinion. Players who use the tag would eventually just recognize mercs by their models and sound effects, like we all do now, and the tags would just become irrelevant. Honestly, the cross symbol and ammo symbol for medics and fire supports, respectively, are enough in my opinion. It’s not like someone’s gonna be in a situation mid-firefight where their gonna be like “I NEED AN ENGINEER,” or something like that. Although, I would wish that the medic cross symbol wouldn’t appear over a Guardian’s head. THAT would confuse new players.
Side note: if this does get implemented, I think it would be better to just have a class’s symbol next to their player name. Medics would have the cross, fire supports have the ammo symbol, engineers have a wrench (or the objective specialist symbol, as to stray away from TF2), assaults have an explosion, and recons probably have like a spotting symbol or something, like the spotter augment’s symbol.

  • Yes, well, you got a point and I’d like to elaborate further on it.

Everyone can attack and kill for example and I think it is well known for many players who starts to play this game, many are watching videos I could guess online and one or two rounds is enough to get that you can kill other players, despite if you’re an objective specialist of some kind.

And the whole point of this suggestion is to aid further these new players, by telling them what you can do as a medic etc and how to work in team, because the point eventually is to play as a team, not going like a hero alone and dying over and over, so somehow give directions to new fellas.

  • I think the purpose, in my opinion is that it’d give a clearer perspective of the game, mercs and their abilities.
  • Well you make good points and I respect your opinion. As suggested in my first post, this is of course irrelevant for experienced players, thus for new ones, it wouldn’t be, I think and you still could have an option to enable / disable it.
  • Yeah, obviously not in mid-fight, if you don’t keybind such commands.

Anyways, my thought was also like this, if you are playing as a medic and your team-mates yelling in the teamchat that they need a medic, perhaps a new player would understand by seeing that text on the HUD and start saving players, just a thought, I’ve noticed medics not curing at all and then it is something wrong, perhaps this suggestion isn’t ultra needed, I am aware of it, but it could be helpful sometimes.

  • Yes, absolutely, my thought too actually, but I didn’t make such symbol, just thought to make a quick video, so you here could catch the idea, the label in my video is far away from what I’m thinking off, a symbol would definitely be best or what were suggested in the second post in this thread.

Imo if it was a symbol located right next to their name it would be A-OK no matter what.

Medic - medical cross thingy
FS - Ammo symbol thingy they have
Assault - Idk, a knife or something
Recon - Idk, an eye or something
Engineer - Some wrench or something

As @STARRYSOCK said, I’m all for it so long as we can toggle it on and off. I don’t want my HUD or screen more cluttered; and I wish this game still had support for some of those old potato configs. I personally prefer a barebones style and realistically, anyone that’s played any sort of shooter should be able to grasp the concept of what an engineer and sniper should do after a week of playing DB.

To expand on the idea of making this game more beginner friendly, I’ll just regurgitate one of my old proposals from a while back: The ability to rent Mercs for Credits. While it was somewhat controversial, I was also happy to see Bushwhacker included as a free starter Merc because it allowed the new kids to fill a variety of roles.

Anyway, the idea of Merc renting is simple and I believe it’d actually increase the amount of money SD makes by leading to more sales of Mercs. Weekly rotations are nice, but I don’t think it’s enough. There is a small window of opportunity to reel in the interest of a F2P player, especially if they get turned off seeing that the few Mercs they’re interested in playing will cost them some money or a decent chunk of game time. This is where a lot of the Pay-To-Win reputation comes from - also combined with the misunderstanding that everything beyond Bronze kits are more than just cosmetic. So, someone may launch this game and see a Merc like Kira they absolutely adore, but she isn’t a starter or in a rotation. Giving them the ability to rent her for a day or week at a generously low Credit cost not only is likely to increase the chance that they fall in love and buy her outright with cash, but it gives beginners a quick and easy way to familiarize themselves with all Mercs in the game and to better understand their roles.
