Choosing the tiebreaker map

(prophett) #1

Creating this thread to start a discussion on how maps are decided upon, especially the tiebreaker map.

I think teams should engage in a map selecton & veto process similar to what CSGO does at majors, rather than the deciding map being determined by a coin flip.

Current DirtyCups.gg Ruleset:

2.2 Map Picking
Maps will be picked as follows:
First Round: Highest seed will pick map, the lowest seed will pick side.
Second Round: Lowest seed will pick map, the highest seed will pick side.
Third Round: Lowest seed will pick map, highest seed will pick side.
You can find seeds on the brackets. Highest seed means the lowest number represented on the bracket, and lowest seed is the higher number on the bracket. (Example: #1 is a higher seed then #8)

Proposed ruleset taken from CSGO’s Dreamhack Rules

Article 11.2. Map choosing for a best-of-three (BO3) match
For this type of match format both team captains must respect the following procedure:

  1. Team B removes one of the 5 maps;
  2. Team A removes one of the 4 remaining maps;
  3. Team A picks one of the 3 remaining maps, will be played as 1st map;
  4. Team B picks one of the 2 remaining maps, will be played as 2nd map;
  5. The last map will be, if needed, played as 3rd map.
    Team A is the winner of a coin toss. The first match will start on the map which has been
    chosen by Team A at step 3 of this procedure. The sides will be chosen via a knife round. The last
    map will only be played if both teams win one map during the match. For the overtime teams do not
    switch sides at the end of a match

Thoughts?

A better solution might be each side gets to pick their map (so we can see teams at their best) then the 3rd map is decided by vetoes
A change would be nice tho it doesn’t sit quite right with me that a team should be able to pick 2 out of 3 maps ;o

I agree completely.

ESL had very nice system and I think it was exactly like you mentioned when it came down to picking maps.

It would be great if the game had this sort of map picking functionality built into it.

Anti!

Yes, we did this in ESL and it was wonderful, actually, I really enjoyed it, as we were the first cup to actually test it out for ESL, or so I was told. But it worked really well, how do you think we could do this for Dirty Cups? Just have the teams sort it out among themselves? I’m really all ears here.

ESL’s veto system was great indeed! With only 5 maps in the pool it shouldn’t be too complicated for the teams to sort it out themselves. Can be done in the lobby chat with all players and possible referees/admins present before the game. Both teams remove one map, both teams pick one map and the remaining map will be the decider if necessary. Easy.

In general I wouldn’t mind at all if the lobbies were improved a bit for competitive play. Could for example add all five maps to the voting list and fix the issue with votes reseting when a player joins. Built-in veto system for the lobbies would be neat, but not really as necessary.

This would be ideal. Love this solution, I wouldn’t imagine it would be too hard?

Also, unlike ESL, we do not have fancy pop-up chats. I was thinking IRC for cup contact, but that seems… Dated. Suggestions? People have been joining Mumble if needed (thank goodness) but it would be a lot easier on all of us if we had match chats.
