Cheaters are coming to get you...

(Angry Machine) #1

Here we go, today I played a bit despite all the issues I have with this game…

And, so there we are, there they come THE CHEATERS.

2 Guys, shooting throught the ground and the whole map, and with 500 Healthbar (yeah, took me 2 chargers point blank to kill them lol)

The whole server waas pissed off.

I really think that if Splash Damage don’t react quickly, this game is doomed.

That’s sad, because there are lot of good ideas T__T

If never been so much frustrated playing a FPS lol

2 chargers?

PC ?

If so, as the server decides these things not the client, I’d say you were “mistaken”

I don’t know how, or why, but that was pissing the people off.

It’s very annoying to be shot through the ground T__T.

360, PS3 or PC?

And, yeah, wtf is a “charger”.

Sorry, charger is clip or mag.

PC of course ^^

Every game has it’s cheaters. The strength & wisdom of the server ops are the ones who can clean up these messes.

Besides, it’s on Steam, it’s Valve’s infallible VAC that guards this game. Obviously they weren’t cheating.

(Kendle) #8

Well, as damage is calculated server side, I still say something else was going on here.

Neither you, nor anyone else on a server, can “cheat” your way to more health / take more damage than the game attributes you with.

If it took 2 full clips to kill someone I’d guess 1 or other of the following happened:-

  1. Lag
  2. You missed

Can you turn on a cheating server? A server that allows cheat commands?
Wouldn’t be VAC secure (but I don’t really know where to look for VAC secure in Brink) and could let people do weird things. You can do it with TF2 (which is why I avoid non VAC secure servers).

Could be a hack. Spoofing some response to teh server that dupes the server into believing you have gained health somehow?

Either way: skip to next server. Hackers can’t enjoy hacking if there’s noone to kill on their server.

(Kendle) #10

I assume so, id engines have always allowed cheats to be enabled, but the server is the authority on that, if the server has cheats enabled everyone on it has cheats enabled, if it doesn’t no-one does.

If that was the case here its the server operator who was cheating, not the player, and yeah, move on to another server is the answer.

You don’t get to tell the server how much health you have, it tells you, there’s no “reponse to spoof”.

Missing point blank on a non-moving target, seriously man…

Lag, maybe, I noticed his healthbar emptied and then refilled instantly, I had to use another clip to take him down

(Kendle) #12

Possible if you’re far enough away, the cone on some weapons is nuts, and it seems like every bullet is random.

Does Medic self-buff appear as instant health re-gen to other people? Can’t say I’ve noticed.

(zenstar) #13

Depends on how things are written but I’d guess SD knows their way around these issues by now.

An example of spoofing responses was the old WoW speed hack. They farmed some of the work off to the client when it came to calculating speed and movement to help server load. This resulted in people being able to set their speed to super high levels until they finally put a speed limit check on the server side.

Now I don’t know what the client is left to calculate and what the server dictates in Brink but as I say: SD has experience in putting out multiplayer games on the idTech platform so I’m guessing it’s fairly tight.

EDIT: And I meant spoofing something like “I’ve received a health boost” or finding some unused call for “I’ve picked up a medkit” Although thinking about it it would make far more sense for the medic to send “administering health boost” and the server to tell you you got a health boost. But then maybe it’s a medic hack who sits in the spawn and constantly spams “administering to player X” calls?

A medic self-buffing health maybe? That’ll take you straight from close-to-death to full health.

(Angry Machine) #15

Maybe, isn’t this considered as a glitch ?

(dazman76) #16

Medic self-buff? No, it’s valid - and very handy, although generally your supply pips are better spent keeping the other, tougher guys alive  There’s always the “self revive” ability too, when you really need to use that last pip to heal someone else. I try not to use too many buffs on myself, but sometimes it does make sense. I play medic quite a bit (almost all the time in freeplay) - a continuation of my ET:QW habits

EDIT: Zen - a very incomplete example of the client/server messaging would be this. The client doesn’t say “I’ve just buffed player X” - it says “I’ve just pressed my Use key”. The server already knows player X is both highlighted (as your target) and alive, so it decides you’re buffing player X. It then sends response messages that indicate (a) you’ve used a supply pip (b) player X now has ??? health. So if anything was to be spoofed, it would actually need to be the server>client messages, rather than the client>server messages - which still wouldn’t really allow you to fool the server. Hmm, crappy example I think

(Aristotle) #17

Isn’t it everybody has the option to have cheats enabled, and not enabled by default? I know in Quake Wars you could join an unranked server that had cheats enabled, but you still had to enable each cheat client side for it to turn on for you, like you still had to open the console and enter the command for noclip before you had it, you didn’t get it automatically.

(Nail) #18

afaik, there’s no VAC on Brink yet

(brbrbr) #19

thats how/why.
Vac will.
work not.
yet
on Brink.
Ever.

Dont be mistaken, there are cheaters using aimbots, ive seen AND experienced it. I wont believe that one player, with the revolver at long range from across the map (which means minimal damage since its range stat is not that high) killed me each times i made 4 feets out of the spawn area with a body one-shot kill. Ive went over the gun’s stats in the mod screen, it doesnt had up at all. I was under cover and got killed as soon as i showed a small bit of my character body. Again i tried a couple of times just showing a feet, arm or shoulder BLAM!!! one-shot revolver body kill from far across the map (standing in front of MG that is near the hack objective to open a second route, the map with the pillar as first obj dont remember the map’s name). Our team was so pissed that we could’nt get outta spawn, we all left at same time, leaving like one or 2 on our team. Went to another server and had fun. I noticed also that custom rules maps contain more of those guys that in standard rules. Dunno if its related, but since ive stopped playing on customs rules server, i have not met one of those special ultimate accurate going over the gun’s stats one-shot kills players. BEWARE!!! COWER IN FEAR! Cheaters will eat you!!!

ps; ill take screenshots in the future, just in order to send account names to SD with proof of something suspicious. I encourage others to do the same.
