Chateau and Dam were stock maps or came with a patch… so converting them is illegal. I don’t know about Castlekeep, but if its a custom you ll need the written permission of thet mapper for a conversion. Also the source file would be helpful because it safes a lot of time… and well… even with a sourcefile re-mapping takes a lot of time.

Apart from that, ppl who rip and convert maps are not the best liked ones on this forum, because we appreciate genuine work and ppl who put effort in realizing their own ideas. So the answer to your question will most likely be no.

Yeah, i remember those maps. The RtCW GOTY/Special Edition map pack included:
mp_chateau
mp_dam
mp_ice
mp_keep
mp_rocket
mp_tram
mp_trenchtoast

MarketGarden by SD was released separately and not included in the map pack.
I know SD made Tram and perhaps also Rocket. Nerve Software made Keep, Chateau, Ice and Trench Toast. But what about The Dam? Was that a SD map too?

Dunno but it doesnt matter anyways cuz id software is the owner of the game and the maps. If you want permission to convert original or patch/GOTY maps, you gotta ask id software. (I m still waiting for an answer to my email I sent to them last october…)

(kamikazee) #5

cough RTCW conversions are still a little more appreciated compared to decompiling a map made by a community mapper.
In the latter, you could ask permission to the guy to use his work. As you just said yourself, you’re still waiting for an answer from id that maybe will never come.

How come then that et_tram exists? By accident?
I didn’t read they had permission, however they stated all work was done by the orignal mapper.

Just my point of view, simply respect the original author and make it clear to others you do.

simply respect the original author and make it clear to others you do

My words… so as long as u don’t have permission… its a) illegal and b) disrespecting.

But this has been discussed in quite a lot of threads in the past so no need to discuss it again. I only pointed it out to Feelgood cuz its his first post on here and he doesn’t know those discussions for sure.

ET has had many ripped off maps, many of which are used in competitions (inclusing official comps like quakcon). No one at ID, SD or Activision seem to give a shit so there is no real incentive not too rip off these maps or indeed anyone elses maps. By not bothering to protect their assets they will just encourage people to do the same to the next generation of games.

(kamikazee) #8

I wouldn’t call a conversion a rip off when it’s done good and it is stated that you didn’t make the level but only did the conversion job.
(if you don’t know: decompiling and making the map playable again is not a job of 10 minutes, all textures are shifted, the detail parameter is gone…)

NOTE: for maps you likely can’t get permission for, like id or Activision. Custom maps are mostly easier to get permission for.

For the record, total map conversions are definitely the intellectual property of the original designers/owners. SD has provided the goldrush source to everyone as a learning tool, and has provided the oasis source to at least one professional mapper for further development. It isn’t totally out of the question that you could get a ‘yes’ on your RtCW conversion projects, but you’d have to have a known skilled mapper lined up and some good reason for doing it. Sometimes, the companies have abandoned support for old products but still will not share their old obselete source code of any kind (the ‘dog in a manger’ effect – aka we have it, you don’t, if we aren’t making any profit on the deal, then you can’t use it either).

Some people might say that even the use of the etpromapscripts function of etpro is a violation of intellectual property rights since it modifies the intended and often non-intended function of the map. I disagree, since this does not modify the original archive in the same way that a low gravity server might override the ‘intended’ game play of a map. The map scripts I have personally authored have been mostly to fix bugs and to improve game features. I’ve never had anyone complain about the bugfixes I have implemented. Exploits are, more often than not, unpleasant surprises to the map authors. Sometimes, it is abandonware and they don’t care what changes you make, so long as you ask first.

I confess that I have forcibly decompiled maps in order to study their brush layout and to de-bug, but I never use the decompiled bsp as a prefab source for other maps, since I don’t really feel like getting sued, and my skill has not yet increased to the level to develop my own Wolfy levels from scratch. Level making in Wolfy is very difficult, when compared to mapping for UT, and so people tend to get touchy when someone takes their level (usually representing weeks to months of work) and hacks it to bits to use it for their own ends.

It’s sort of like stealing their car, taking it to a chop shop and make it into another new car. Even if you bring it back full of gas, they’re still likely to be pissed.

I have conversions of Tram, Rocket and Ice running on my server. Just dying to round out my collection with Chateau, Keep and Dam. The ET server I’m running is Back to RTCW, and of course it has all the old favorites. Assault, Village, Ice, Tram, Beach, MarketGarden, Base, Sub, Tank, Depot, Airstrip, Xdam, Breakout and Wizerness. Hmmm might have missed one or two, but anyways, its alot of fun playing those old maps. If you wanna check it out, pop onto et4.evilsmurfs.com

(]UBC[ McNite) #11

You are missing TheRiver in that collection
(I didn’t know Wizernes was ported to ET…)

(]ES[ Mr Feelgood) #12

Damn, thanks man, didnt know The River was ported! And yes, Wizerness was ported perfectly to ET! Check it out… :drink:

(]UBC[ McNite) #13

I have start the ET_chateau conversion a while ago with all autorization needed from Original mapping team, but I have stop the project to work more on PriceOfPeace. By the way, I have start re-edit the thing that got lost through the conversion but it still need a lot of brush/textures clean-up and to add the models.

If someone want to continue it, I have no problem in giving my started work to someone that have the Legal autorisation of working it  It may look like simple to convert a map but it’s not, so think it twice before thinking of it.

For questions about it, just contact me on msn/email at mudhworld@hotmail.com

Original mappesr are Nerve Software, contact them there: http://www.nervesoftware.com/contact.html they have reply the same day.

EDITED: Wow, my second post after 2 years of visting SD forum each days.

(Mark.C) #15

Ill do it.

(SCDS_reyalP) #16

Note that freak did get permission to convert rocket AFAIK, so the other GOTY maps might not be completely out of the question.

(Luxuriant) #17

My 2 cents. I think Hummer’s Kungfugrip would be awesome for ET. It was remade for WildWest Mod 1.41. Does he not work for S.D. now?

(]ES[ Mr Feelgood) #18

Well I run a server, and am quite good at that, however I know nothing about mapping. Thats why I came here to make a plea to the Guru’s. Anyone that can convert these maps, and help me round out my collection, I will be forever in your debt.

McNite, I added your The River II map to my rotation. HUGE map, but looks real sweet. I will have to play it more. Took me a while just to figure out where to repair the tram and get it going. :bash: Thanks man, nice map.

[/quote]You don’t mean my CastleKeep SP map do you?

(CrazyGuy) #20

I remember that map.
Still couldn’t figured out the objectives. But its a cool map. Abit small in some places and some places needed some cover as Tunn suggested to you.

Also, i know that Ifurita would loved to port over “Keep”. If permission was given.
He said he would do it in a heart beat.
