Character Saves are NOT server-side!

(ryryelectro) #1

Hey guys,

I run dual operating systems and since my game runs better with Win7, I prefer using that operating system. However, I already have a level 13 character on WinXP.

When I launch the game in Win7, all my stuff is gone and I have to create a new character. Wtf? Why aren’t the characters and unlocks saved server-side?

Also, I tried importing the game.save file from WinXP’s steam folder to Win7’s steam folder and on game launch, it still asks me to create a new character.

So what’s the deal? I can’t bring that character over even though it is the SAME steam account and CD-key!!!

check and make sure you still have it on XP, save data should be in /My Documents/splash damage/brink/base

Isn’t the game.save file in Steam\userdata*STEAM ACCOUNT NUMBER*\22350\remote

(Nail) #4

can’t say 100% , but I saw it somewhere, could be sdnet folder in same location

[edit] not thinking

try there what ya got to lose ?

trhe game.save file is in that location I stated above.

Also, I tried backing up the Lvl 13 game.save file and then overriding the current game.save file and it didn’t work. When I start the game, I automatically am forced to make a new character, and a new game.save file is created by the game, overriding my replaced game.save file.

Doesnt make sense. Crispy has said:

We have identified an issue with the PC version of the game that can corrupt a player’s character data, making the save file unusable and resetting all progress. A fix is in the works already and will be released as soon as possible. In the meantime, please follow the advice below:

To avoid losing your character progress, do not close the game during start-up before you have reached the main menu.

As an extra safeguard, you can make a backup of your save game by saving a copy of game.save in …\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata#user#\22350\remote\ before you begin play.

This issue does not affect the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

What’s the point of backing up the game.save file if it can’t even be restored? I copy and paste the backup game.save file into that location and the game simply overrides it when I launch the game.

is it all ok on Win XP ?

(ryryelectro) #8

Of course because I never deleted the game.save file from XP. It is just importing that game.save file from one Steam installation folder to another. Crispy says to back up the game.save file in an event that your character is deleted, but that game.save file keeps getting overwritten by the game!

But on XP, I get weird flickering black boxes everywhere, so I want to use Win7 !!

Help please :frowning:

It probably hashed it based on your OS and can tell you’re not using a legitimate save for that acccount, I assume.

(ryryelectro) #10

Can’t be because I even tried to put back my original Win7 game.save file and it STILL asks me to create a new character on game launch! So now I lost that character as well! wtf?

Actually I have several gaming computers in my house and I play from different ones and my same BRINK character account is on each one when I load up the game so I believe it to be saved in a STEAM Cloud. The problem you are having can be just a bug not ironed out with BRINK and the different OS’s cooperating. Weird but you never know. My main system is 7 64 and the others are Vista 64 and no issues. Thought this info might help further.

(Nail) #12

did you install the game on Win 7 as well ?
or just logging into Steam ?

[edit] not sure if first question is applicable, don’t know enough about Steam

Thanks a ton for this info. This little piece of information has proved vital to my trial-and-error investigations.

Ok so, you reminded me of Steam Cloud and how I have Steam Cloud disabled on both OS’s. So I booted into each OS and re-enabled it. Basically, I re-enabled Steam Cloud on Win7, booted back into WinXP, enabled Steam Cloud there, and then I launched BRINK and SURPRISE SURPRISE, it told me that my files differ from the ones on Steam Cloud and asks me if I want to “Download file to machine” or to “Upload file to Steam Cloud”. Obviously because I wanted the the XP’s game.save file, I chose “Upload to Steam Cloud”. So then I booted back into Win7, launched BRINK and it gave me the same two options; this time, I chose “Download file to machine”. Then, tada I saw my beautiful sexy man on my main screen on Win7.

HIP HIP HURRAY. +Rep to everyone who tried to help!
