If I choose - for example - Resistance but want to change to Security, is this possible?

You can have a Resistance outfit and a Security outfit for each of your characters.

So we really only need 3 characters. One for each body type?

I’ll probably do 6 anyways, just to fine tune the coppers looks from the res.

Body types are changable between games. O_o

However, you’ll want that because while you CAN respec a character, you lose a level in doing so, and have to get it back to get that ability point back.

As Linsolv said the character slots are primarily for class focus, i.e. How you spread out your attribute between classes
Alternatively, if you so desire, you can view the character slots as playing dress-up

while in game during a round [warm-up/lobby or mid round (not sure about mid game because that might encourage people into team stacking)] players are able to select: team, class, equipment and probably fire squads.
