Changing Characters & Changing Body Types prior to a mission

I may have been mistaken, but I remember discussing prior to release that while you cannot change characters or body types mid-match. You would be able to change your character and body type between matches, and specifically change them after knowing what map you will be on in the next match.

So, say I am playing public free play, I finish Container City and I see that Sec Tower is going to be the next map.

I had been playing a light engineer, and I want to play a heavy medic for sec tower. I have a different character that is built to be at least a slightly better heavy medic than my engineer character is.

So I decide to switch characters. (or at least body types.)

but as far as I tell to go to either the character selection or appearance menus I need to leave the public group that I am in to make the changes and then there are no gaurantees that I will make it back to that group, that mission.

Yes, I can choose to play with friends, or things might be different if I am in a fire-team, (though I wonder if it would kick me out of the fire-team if I leave the match area).

Can anyone else confirm this game behavior, or tell me how else I may work around this?

If there is a way to change characters or even body types between matches, I haven’t figured it out. It would definitely be nice to change those without having to leave the session, which does kick you out of the fire team as well.

At them moment I don’t even see the point of a fire team, other than more easily being able to find my friends in the match due to the purple name.

fireteams also help with communication and keep other pub players together, but if a fire team won’t hold together when a person goes to change a character or body type then that sucks. While I don’t need to or want to change characters in a match, it is frustrating, especially with the problems right now of finding a non-lagging group to play with, to then have to leave that group if you want to make any changes at all.
