Changes in map (removing some terrain)

(MadJack) #1

I realized that my terrain map have about 20% which I don’t use and I’m thinking about removing most of those areas where nothing exists except the terrain itself.

I was able to bring tris count down some, with hinting, but since there’s lots of drawn terrain that isn’t serving except as eye candy, I want to cut those parts out as it’ll be easier on total tris count.

Now I’m wondering how I should go at it. I thought about it and a couple of ways came to mind. I could, remake the whole terrain, cut those parts and make terrain manually to patch it up or I could cut and wall it with that plugin (can’t remember the name) using wall on the Z axis.

First solution would be seemless but I’d have to carve out the entire map.
Second, vertex editing and different levels will make it hell to patch it up.
Third solution seems to me like the best way to go at it but I’m wondering about the end results and how it’ll look once compiled.

I’d like to have inputs on that and how you’d go at it.

Thanks in advance.

While I’m thinking about it, I’d like to know at what point will you guys say: No, that’s too much tris! What do you consider too many tris?

Personally I think it depends at what places you have high r_speeds / too many tris.

Try to figure out where in your map the fighting will occur: Near the objectives , at the end of a tunnel or corridor etc…
If you have too many tris at those places I recommend to reduce them.

Again, personally, I consider anything above 25K as unwanted but if you take a look at the official maps they rarely go below 20K and at some places almost reach 40K.
