The design of shotguns makes them inherently worse at range. This was the original design of the shotgun but people complained that it was too poor of a weapon to use in anything but low level pubs, and they were correct. The gun then had its damage decreased, spread cone tightened, and removed the headshot multiplier. So in effect, 1 HKs at close range became impossible, and 2 HKs are only possible if you can hit a player with 100% of the pellets twice in a row, which nobody can do against any competent opponent.

So the intention was to make them more viable at range to compete with assault weapons

But what happened instead was they became bad at all ranges. Nobody has perfect aim, so the usual damage per shot is between 20 and 40. Pitiful. Even mediocre aim with a machine pistol has a higher DPS, and I very commonly kill shotgun users at medium/close with one.

There’s nothing situational or niche about them. They’re just bad. They’re supposed to be for close range fighting, but they aren’t anymore.

And if you’re trying to bring reality into it, regular shotguns will kill you from across the map, as it were. As the video shows, buckshot is still penetrating boards out at 300 feet away. Fewer pellets hit the target, but the ones that do are still very lethal

So it’s a moot point. The current shotguns are garbage, but still effective at a way way shorter range than actual shotguns.

not trying to derail here, but shotguns don’t fire 8 pellets.

Ahnuhld fires 11 pellets 6 damage each - 66 dmg total
Hollunds fires 11 pellets 7 damage each - 77 dmg total
Remburg fires 12 pellets 7 damage each - 84 dmg total

i’m like 99% sure those are the correct figures 'cause the math works out on them. They couldn’t fire 8 pellets because 77, 66, and 84 aren’t multiples of 8, and i don’t think the game is built to consider decimal points worth of damage.

Not a derail, I frequently do that

They used to be 10 pellets @ 8 damage each and 11 @ 9 for the Remburg but it was changed to increased pellets and lower damage, you’re right. I always try to remember how many pellets there are and remember the star pattern spread they have, so I count in my head and vaguely remember an 8 somewhere and yeah

In any case, Hollunds went from 80 damage to 88 then down to 77
Remburg went from 88 to 108 then down to 84

All in all, shotgun damage is crap now.

That video demonstrates how piss weak DB shotguns are.

So in conclusion (from this video): DB Shotguns needs 4x damage buff and 2x lethal range
