Cel Shading graphic mod

(nUllSkillZ) #1

Hi,

today I’ve started to mess around with the graphics to create something like a “cel shading” graphic mod.
Not sure if this will be successfull or will be finished.
I’ve seen ydnar’s post in the Q3Map2 forum concerning a shader for the players.
I also know about the abilities of Q3Map2 to create maps with a cel shading look.
But I’ve read that the option -flat is only a hack.
And that for future maps “cel shading” textures should be used.
Because of this and because I want to create this feeling also for the stock maps I’ve converted some of the textures to one color pictures.
If I have something interesting I will post pictures.

First you did black and white, now this…are you bored?

wtf do u mean by cell shading?

(bacon) #4

Cel-Shading is making it look like a cartoon. It was used in XIII.

cel shading = cartoon / comic style rendering

Some first pictures after editing about 10% of all the grapics.
Most of them are textures.
All of them are converted to one color pictures by averaging the colors of the original pictures.
So this has been the easy part.

Hmm, just had the impression that this could also be achieved by some graphic “tweakings”.

looks like a “pr0-gamer” cfg to me. ;-p

(MindLink) #7

bleh. why would you want such a flat looking map without real cel outlines?

(Fusen) #8

agree with michi lol , makes it abit too eays to see your opponents

(nUllSkillZ) #9

There are no outlines because they are created during the compiling process of Q3Map2.
I know this already.
And I know also that there is the possibility to compile maps with the option “-flat”.
But I don’t want to de-compile the maps, change the maps (worldspawn must have another key/value pair) and then re-compile the maps.

Someone who uses graphic tweaks already will see his opponent also too easy.

Why in the world would you want to get rid of the detail?

Also, has anyone created a mod that stops people from using cfg files/scripts? I must say that does seem like cheating to me, having such an advantage over others. Especially over people who are new to the game who don’t know about such “tweaks”. Things like the rapid akimbos… why? Surely part of the game is getting used to clicking your mouse at the right speed to achieve this. Also, altering the way you see the game seems a bit sad to me aswell, all the effort of the mappers and the engine designers to add detail in to make it look a whole lot better is just being thrown away by those players who want to get one up on those who actually appreciate the game as it should be. It would be really good if there was a mod out there which stops people from doing this, and if there isn’t i’m suggesting it now.

Suggestion noted. I’ll see what I can do

mr tickles usin a script on akimbo’s is fixed well in etpro it is anyway

I’ve had also the idea to create “speech bubbles” for the voicechat’s.

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #14

jees man, are you trying to ruin the game?

(Lanz) #15

It’s a gfx mod, you don’t have to play it and you can’t unless the server runs it anyway, so what’s the problem?

(nUllSkillZ) #16

I’ve thought about releasing three parts (if this mod will be continued and will be finished):

  • Player-Skins as one “.pk3”
  • Rest of the Grapics as one “.pk3”
And for the speech bubbles I’m afraid I will have to code.
This will be the third package.
Edit:

Berzerk just has informed me about the limitation of “.pk3”'s.
So I think it will be better to release only one “.pk3”

Unless we one day have access to the ET rendering pipeline and the geometry (thus, to the engine itself) i am afraid
you can’t do much than tweaking textures…
Chances are that we must wait that ET becomes an abadon-ware and the will of Id to release the ET.exe source code
for this…
