Caulking, water terrain island, and comments please

(cicero) #1

Hello!

I’m still working on my fishing village. But no I’ve come across 2 thinks I like to ask about…

  1. Caulking.
Caulking is of course really good but when adding a texture on a brush, the texture goes on all sides, can you decide to hve the texture on just some sides?

  2. I’ve now made my map with the terrain, houses, bunkers and so on. but what about the water? How do you place water so it doesn’t collide with the terrain? (it’s an island…)

Also, I would be very happy if someone would like to comment on my map… Please e-mail me and I send the map (GtkRadiant .bsp format) in reply.

Thx!

  1. press ctrl+shift to select one side fo the brush.

2)just make a big waterbrush, and cover the entire map with it, and level the height to the height u want, since u are on an asland that should work i think

Hello!

I found out how to do water, a little while ago, by reading tutorials. Specifically http://planetquake.com/bubba/tutorial.html (Bubba’s Arena Tutorials) for water.

This is how I did it:

  1. Make a caulk brush for where you want to put your water (if you have an island in the middle, make it easier on yourself by making one large brush covering the whole map, and just lower the height so it works. This will keep it all simple).

  2. Now, select the WHOLE brush. Then go to ‘textures> common’ and use the “nodrawwater” texture (this will make it so that the brush isn’t drawn, so you won’t have the problem of being able to walk on it).

  3. Now for the actual texture. You need something with a shader so it will act like water (if you don’t have it act like water, someone will jump in and go splat). In this department, you are somewhat limited. The only shader I found for this is in ‘textures> liquids_sd’ called “siwa_water” or “siwa_water2” … they’re the same thing really.

Click on the top of your water brush using Ctrl+Shift to select the top FACE, and texture it.

  1. Complile, and test. It should work.

Edit: For the sky, make sure you are using a texture with a shader. You can always tell if something has a shader if there is a WHITE BOX around it.

thanks

(flashkillaman) #8

but i also have a sky problem its like there is a wall

(CanadaDemon) #9

What do you mean? Like the sky is acting like a wall? If so, thats a shader problem. For skies, I always use the one in ‘textures> fueldump’ called “fueldumpsky”.

(flashkillaman) #10

I use that one in my first trys it worked but now it doesnt work anymore

(flashkillaman) #11

it works again

strange :???:

(flashkillaman) #12

how can you make night?

(Shallow) #13

flashkillaman, you REALLY need to go read some tutorials and use the forum search function (and the internet’s search function - Google has lots of pages) before posting another few dozen one-line posts  Pretty much all of your questions are covered more than adequately in tutorials, manuals and existing threads on this and other boards. Check the sticky threads. The night maps issue was covered in a thread very recently, you can definitely search for that.

Try figuring stuff out for yourself too, you’ll learn more that way.

Hello!

Post my reply here as well since my problem is so huge!

I’ve got a really BIG problem…

I’ve made my map, ALL of my map by adding texture to each brush. That way the texure then goes on all sides making the map really slow.
Now when almost finished my map is REALY REALY slow… Got a tip in my last post here that it’s possible to add texture to just one side of a brush so the question then will be:

How do I smartest add caulk to sides that aren’t visible? Is there some smart command in GtkRadiant or some program out on the net that automaticly search for such sides and add a caulk texture there or do I manually have to add it on each and every brush?

Please, there are about 138 000 brushes in my map…
I’ve Also got some houses, four floors high AND turned 45 degrees so it’s really a BIG BIG BIG problem…

Thx for all help you might give me as I don’t want to start over again…

Thx once again!

That’s really easy actually! (And yes, you have to manually do it, regretibly.)

[ul]-Use the camera in 3D View to look at each specific brush you want to change (This allows you to get the best angle for some brushes).
-Press Shift and then Click on a brush. (Or click on MULTIPLE brushes)
-Click on your CAULK texture to turn ALL sides Caulk again,
-then just simply apply your original texture on the one face that you want using Crtl+Shift+Mouse-click. [/ul]

It’s not really easy when you have to do it 138,000 times though.

I’m afraid there is no automated way to do this. You will manually have to go over every brush to fix the unseen sides.

However, I would do it slightly differently than CanadaDemon described.

-Use the camera in 3D View to look at each specific brush you want to change (This allows you to get the best angle for some brushes).
-Press Shift and then Click on a brush. (Or click on MULTIPLE brushes)
-The whole brush should now be highlighted. Now press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Mouse-click on the face you want to retain the texture. This should deselect the desired textured face while keeping the unseen faces selected.
-apply caulk
-repeat for next 137,999 brushes.

i read them but i have strange problems with sky entity making and stuff sometimes

Hello!

I’ve done as written below in an earlier post here on teh forum The only thing is that I can’t see into the water but I can see out of it. How do I change it so that I also can’t see out of the water?

THX!
