Cannot believe STEAM?

NO Doubt - this is wrong place to post/vent this - BUT don’t have any plac else and know all/most of you are quite familiar with Steam.
I am a Senior Gamer and have not used my Steam Acct for years and since then I have changed my Internet Provided and e-mail ACCT…so I come back to Steam because I am buying BRINK…I see in my Acct they list my OLD e-mail address so with all my accounts I got to simply change it [NO so simple with them] it tells me in the process of making this change that they will send a verification to my now OLD e-mail address prior to them being able to make the change. GOOD LUCK !!! So I write their Support Dept thinking they will just change this and I’m good to go - NO way…just heard from them - they want all kind of PROOF that I purchased the games in my account and how I paid for them etc. Pay Pal; MC etc. and serial numbers I believe.
I don’t know or have all those numbers etc. after all this time…so STUPID…I just wrote and told them to just CLOSE this Account and I will sell Brink when it arrives.

CRAP!!!

Umm oook,

All you have to do is if you paid with paypal is go to your history see all the transaction you’ve made and pick the transaction that was made to Steam to purchase the game, or request a statement from your credit card company from a particular date you made a purchase from Steam and give those to Steam Support and your account info will change over to the new email addy. Otherwise there is nothing stupid about Steam policy…

(Crytiqal) #3

Ofcourse they want proof, what else you expect?

I bet if someone had hacked your account due to insufficient security you’d be going crazy.
Next time remember to swap your accounts linked to an email address before you lose that email address.
Welcome to the internet. This is how it works.

Get a gmail account or something online that is unlikely to change and is accessible from almost anywhere.

Hello Steam Support,

I recently changed my email account and now I cannot access my steam account anymore.
I dont have any proof of this.
could you guys change the authentication to my new email? kthnxbye

lol

I hear you guys on this and I hear them too…BUT it’s too bad that like many other sites they don’t use for example, personal questions/answers to prove that you are who you say you are ie. “What is your Mother’s maiden name?” One or two of those would suffice.
I have changed and use a “hotmail” account now so not more problems like this in the future. I have had to change my e-mail address before with PayPal and my Bank and other credit cards…w/o this type of unbelievable run a round. The last time I used Steam was probably 2-4 years ago…remember I did buy DIRT from them and probably paid with my PP Acct…don’t know if one can go back that far with PP…guess I may find out…I think they even want more info than that to prove I am the person that used to have that old email address.
BUMMMMMMMER!

It sucks, but security has to be harsh. Even those personal questions are easy to crack for any determined hacker as most people leave the answers on their facebook page.

Hope you get your account back. Maybe you can offer them statements from your old ISP that proves your email address and then a copy of your ID to prove you’re that person?

Alternatively: if there weren’t any games on the account you don’t mind losing then start up a new account.

Some steam libraries, like Sockdog’s contain a collection of games worth tens of thousands, there’s no way they just hand that over to anyone asking for it.

(orbeavhawk) #9

Understand and THANKS! I was just really shook up after I was informed about what I had to do to get verified again that “I just kind of LOST me COOL” for abit…but after reading some of your posts and cooling down…I went to my PayPal Acct [did not realize that you could go back so far] and went back to 2008 and found PROOF of Purchase of a Game from Valve…I made a Copy and sent it to them. Thank God! That did it
they sent me a NEW PW and set the Acct with my new PW…so I am off to load up my new DVD of “BRINK” [came in thee mail about same time as them resetting everything].

TKS michael

congrats getting that sorted.

The exact same thing happened to me a year ago when foolishly deleting an old email address. All I did was simply ask steam support for instructions to recover my account. They requested my cc credentials from past purchases and after supplying them with that information my account was reactivated.

Don’t think it’s that much but I’d be pretty pissed if I lost that account due to Valve just handing it over to someone with a rage on. I also think it’s good that they have an actual human there to evaluate and offer multiple criteria to unlock when the system when coded security prevents it.

@Orbeavhawk
Now you have your account back be sure you set up the additional security options by validating your email account (prevents people changing your password etc without an email confirmation) and also set up Steam Guard which then requires any login on a new PC to be validated with a code send to your email. Obviously make sure your email password isn’t the same as your steam password.

Glad to read it’s sorted

(Ajax's Spear) #14

What exactly is a “senior gamer” anyway?

(zenstar) #15

One who remembers playing on amber / green monitors?
Or maybe one who remembers when “console” joysticks had 1 button

I <3’ed my C64

(Ajax's Spear) #16

I thought it might have been an age reference as well, but I find it hard to believe that someone who refers to themselves as a “senior” could have such bad punctuation. I mean, no one is perfect, but yikes.

(zenstar) #17

Well, if you remember the atari or commador 64 fondly then you’re probably above a certain age anyway.
And I know plenty of middle-age people with atrocious spelling and grammar. It has nothing to do with age (although I will concede the point that txt spk iz rottn yoof brnz… yo).
