Skyhammer’s airstrike used to have a 60 seconds CD during Steam Closed Beta, but it got raised to 70 seconds due to constant airstrikes and impossibility to get the EV anywhere. Because everyone were starting out and Skyhammer was free, he was an extremely common merc.

As of today, I am still a bit worried about seeing a big Skyhammer CD reduction, as it could quickly lead to some fucked up things when low levels play between themselves. However I think another kind of buff could work : how about splitting the marker’s CD from the actual airstrike ?

As most of you should know, the airstrike can be used like a small grenade indoors. The airstrike won’t be called in, but you’ll get 20 seconds CD instead of a full 70 seconds CD. The idea here is to (sort of) split the ability cooldowns so you can send what I would call an “airstrike dud” (basically the airstrike marker itself without an airstrike call) every 20 seconds, you can only effectively call an airstrike every 70 seconds. We can also add a QoL change that would allow you to switch from dud mode to airstrike mode the same way you switch from dumb mode to guided mod on Javelin’s rocket launcher.

This change would give to Skyhammer the advantage of being a much more versatile merc indoors compared to Arty or Kira. However it also makes Skyhammer a bit harder to fully understand. So he might not be the most fitting starter merc along with Aura.

Could also be paired with a small CD reduction from 70 to 60s ofc.

Sky is much easier to play than Arty and far easier than Kira for a beginner, in my opinion. Very straightforward weapons and playstyle with the AK and M4 which will be far easier to manage and more familiar to anyone that’s just picking this game up compared to bursts and semis. Very simple abilities as well. I think he and Aura would be best staying as the starters. I know rotation is a thing, but I’ve always wanted Bush to be a starter as well. The easiest engineer ability to use with run-of-the-mill automatic subs. Anyone could pick him up and play and it’s a nightmare to watch beginners use Proxy and Fletcher.

Taking him out of the starter group would allow for some well needed rework, though.

Very interesting points being made. The game is definitely overdue an in-depth balance pass which we are building towards. The reason why there hasn’t been many balance passes for…quite a while, is because we’ve been implementing a new system behind the scenes to gather all of this data. Giving Skyhaggis a shorter airstrike cooldown sounds appreciable (1 minute is good enough), but what I’d really like to see is removing or shaving down on the duds. (20 secs for a miss toss just feels too punishing honestly). His main appeal for me is his M51 card which turns you from an ammo dispenser to the CEO of Yummunition.

Also, I love how Shoe’s link gets immediately blocked by my country. It honestly made me chuckle so hard I’m crying.

20 secs isn’t just for missed tosses though. Remember it still acts as a grenade when it doesn’t have vertical LoS to the sky. However, when compared to Fragger (if 20sec is the CD) this time is quite long.

I think that higher CD could be justified if Skyhammer had both the possibility to send those disabled airstrike markers every 20 seconds as well as airstrikes every minutes. The airstrike marker by itself can be surprisingly efficient.

its the airstrike cooldown that feels very long. The marker sometimes had a little LoS to the sky and called airstrike.

but if SD limit only at full LoS skyhammer get airstrike, skyhammer will lose utility.

like @Eox said, it would be nice if it has cancel function.

the marker itself is already more than enough with 80dmg to help teammates inside building. Even sometimes i throw it first and then start shooting for the cheese kills.
