Can anyone who likes Brink recommend me other MP FPSs for the ps3?

(fearlessfox) #1

While we’re waiting for Brink to be smoothed out, could any of you guys who appreciate Brink offer me any alternatives?

I’m not too bothered about campaign modes, what I’m really after is some super-solid MP. It doesn’t have to be OBJ based, just well made and enjoyable.

I log in for a few games of Brink most evenings, but it feels like playing in mud a lot of the time and there aren’t enough consistent human players which is mostly likely due to the teething problems.

I’d like something to play while we wait for Brink to take shape (if it ever does… eep!).

Cheers!

Team Fortress 2.

(tokamak) #3

Quake Wars, though I obviously have no idea how the PS3 version is like. And there’s Killzone.

Usual candidates I’m afraid, kz3 is good but has some issues of it’s own, but u can get past them , bad company 2 is awesome, and of course ur McDonalds of fps in form of black ops

Please read.

Thanks guys, Killzone 3 was the one that looked the most interesting for me. What are the issues?

I’ll check some BC2 MP vids.

Anyone played the Uncharted 2 MP?

MAG.

Squad based objective FPS game. I loved it. Well over 150 hours in it. Zipper made a great game IMO.

(pinksocking) #7

Killzone 3 is your best bet : )

I have KZ3 and Brink - Add me

Pinksocking

(Codine) #8

Enemy Territory: Cake Wars

(xzen) #9

Warhawk (Third person but still really, really good. No idea if many people still play though)
Section 8: Prejudice
ET: Quake Wars

(RadBrad31) #10

MAG has dedicated servers. Different classes you can spec into. 3 different factions to choose to join, all with their own advantages and disadvantages in weaponry. And best yet… only 16.95 from Amazon with free shipping.

MAG - Amazon

KZ3 is still 51 dollars up there on Amazon. But, I’m a bit biased towards MAG, I enjoyed it’s MP more than I enjoyed KZs.

(fearlessfox) #11

Oh, I can’t decide between BC2 and MAG… I have the whole weekend, I think I’ll get both! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll try KZ3 in a month or two when it’s come down a little.

Cheers guys.

PS - I’m also investing in a fight stick for SF4. If anyone plays this too, could you add me to lend me a hand with some training?

Cheers!

KZ2! Not KZ3.

Killzone 2’s guns have more recoil, thus making the game more of a technical shooter. KZ3’s guns have much less recoill, and responsive ADS…which makes it more of a twitch shooter.

If you like Brink, then I assume that you prefer a technical shooter where you need to strafe.

Killzone 2 is more of a hardcore game…Killzone 3 was geared towards casual players. If you like Brink, I assume that you are more of a hardcore player who doesn’t mind some frustration in learning.

In my opinion, all great fps games need some sort of advanced skill that people can practice even after hundreds of hours. For Brink, that advanced skill will probably be difficult wall-jumps. I believe that in the future, players will discover a lot of difficult maneuvers for creating new routes to locations, or just navigating the maps more quickly. In Quake, you have rocket jumping. In Killzone 2, you have the deployable spawn points - at an advanced level you can learn how to throw invisible small points that don’t alert the other team to their presence. You can spend a lot of time learning and searching for ways to make invisible spawn points in any section of a map. Furthermore, throwing spawn points against good teams requires an interesting kind of strategy and creativity that is unique to Killzone 2.
Killzone 3 took out the deployable spawn system in exchange for capturable spawn points which are friendlier to casual players. (They ensure that the player never gets spawn camped, in exchange for taking away the freedom for the player to place spawn points wherever they want.)
As a result, Killzone 3 is left with no advanced skills really. Without the spawn grenades, and without gun recoil, there is really nothing to drive the experienced player to play and improve. At 200 hours in, you won’t have the pleasure of feeling as though you are a much better player than you were at 100 hours in. As a result, Killzone 3 really doesn’t have the longevity of Killzone 2.

There are a lot of people who don’t like Killzone 2 (as there are a lot of people who don’t like Brink.) It is a game that rewards the patient, and gets better the more you play. Still, I recommend it to anyone who likes Brink. On the other hand, many Killzone 2 players such as myself were eagerly waiting Brink. The heart of the two games are very similar. It should be cheap now, and there will always be a small, hardcore community still playing the game, for as long as the servers are still up.

KZ2 and MAG are your best bets if you want something similar, though KZ2 is p2p so that’s kinda out of the question if you want to have a good time.

But MAG is great, or at least was, in the beta, I hear they wrecked it with patches. Back then it felt pretty much like a PC game if you imagined that you were playing with a broken mouse/arm. I kinda miss it!

Well, I had KZ2 when I first bought my ps3 (And the network was down), but I traded it in as I found the control scheme god-awful. I didn’t enjoy the placement of duck and aim, my hand felt contorted every time I wanted to pop up and iron sight from behind cover.

I might give it another go though, the MP does sound very much my kind of thing.

Just bought BC2 as the videos looked like a lot of fun and it’s not the type of shooter I usually go for. I’ll report back soon with verdicts.

Also got a Madcatz fightpad for SF4, so hopefully I won’t keep sucking. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone played the Uncharted 2 MP?[/QUOTE]

kz3 has some issues, dead clan system, dead dlc maps, downgraded from kz2 gameplay in many ways. My clan dropped kz3 to pickup brink but alas this also has issues

we are currently on socom 4, uncharted 2 mp is good but uncharted 3 is later in the year so dunno if u might wanna spend money on that then have to go pickup u3 plus the uncharted 3 beta is soon

future titles to lookout for are uncharted3, resistance3, starhawk (early 2012 release), battlefield 3

current titles to choose from imo are socom 4 and probably kz but the clan system is dead so depends on if u just wanna pub or looking for a clan to compete

“Enemy Territory: Quake Wars” is kind of the predecessor of Brink and works very well on a 360, so I’d imagine that the PS3 version would be as good. (I usually play on PC, but had the 360 version as well to play with some mates)

I don’t like many ‘modern’ shooters as they usually just turn into boring killfests, which is why Brink and ETQW stand out for me. I’d say ETQW actually has some better objective based gameplay than Brink, but it’s early days.

(fearlessfox) #17

I have to play currently (MP online):

Uncharted 2, Resistance 2, Bad Company 2, Street Fighter 4, Brink.

I reckon I’ve got enough for now. If any of you guys play any of these feel free to add me for some games.

Thanks for all the responses.

(fearlessfox) #18

Been playng BC2 all evening/morning, and man this game is intense. Massive maps, beautiful graphics, weighty and tactical shooting mechanics, excellent team play…

I love Brink, I really do, but this game is showing me just how slick a ps3 shooter can be and it’s (not) pretty.

(weeschwee) #19

bfbc2 is amazing! it has flaws, but it’s still great.

(Oschino1907) #20

BFBC2 was my main MP FPS before Brink, have a few hundred hours on it. Nothing can compare to the BFBC2 moments. Def has its flaws and without a good squad can be a poopchute but when you get a good match goin and it goes the distance you will wonder why you waited sooooo long. Lol i got it day 1 but many i know waited and regretted every min of it, although its still great and has a steady population the golden age was def last summer and this fall after first real new maps and then the Vietnam expansion around Christmas.

I am always up for playing with some Brink players on BFBC2, still have some guns I want to plat and more Dog Tags are always a good thing!!! Kill the Bush Wookies!!!
