KZ2! Not KZ3.
Killzone 2’s guns have more recoil, thus making the game more of a technical shooter. KZ3’s guns have much less recoill, and responsive ADS…which makes it more of a twitch shooter.
If you like Brink, then I assume that you prefer a technical shooter where you need to strafe.
Killzone 2 is more of a hardcore game…Killzone 3 was geared towards casual players. If you like Brink, I assume that you are more of a hardcore player who doesn’t mind some frustration in learning.
In my opinion, all great fps games need some sort of advanced skill that people can practice even after hundreds of hours. For Brink, that advanced skill will probably be difficult wall-jumps. I believe that in the future, players will discover a lot of difficult maneuvers for creating new routes to locations, or just navigating the maps more quickly. In Quake, you have rocket jumping. In Killzone 2, you have the deployable spawn points - at an advanced level you can learn how to throw invisible small points that don’t alert the other team to their presence. You can spend a lot of time learning and searching for ways to make invisible spawn points in any section of a map. Furthermore, throwing spawn points against good teams requires an interesting kind of strategy and creativity that is unique to Killzone 2.
Killzone 3 took out the deployable spawn system in exchange for capturable spawn points which are friendlier to casual players. (They ensure that the player never gets spawn camped, in exchange for taking away the freedom for the player to place spawn points wherever they want.)
As a result, Killzone 3 is left with no advanced skills really. Without the spawn grenades, and without gun recoil, there is really nothing to drive the experienced player to play and improve. At 200 hours in, you won’t have the pleasure of feeling as though you are a much better player than you were at 100 hours in. As a result, Killzone 3 really doesn’t have the longevity of Killzone 2.
There are a lot of people who don’t like Killzone 2 (as there are a lot of people who don’t like Brink.) It is a game that rewards the patient, and gets better the more you play. Still, I recommend it to anyone who likes Brink. On the other hand, many Killzone 2 players such as myself were eagerly waiting Brink. The heart of the two games are very similar. It should be cheap now, and there will always be a small, hardcore community still playing the game, for as long as the servers are still up.
