Campaign Descriptions

(Tomasina) #1

I have created two campaigns and in each .campaign file I have added the following descriptions. When I run the first campaign the first description below appears fine. But when I run the second, the second description does not appear at all. Any ideas?

I can read the descriptions from the map selection screen.

On the campaigns that do not display the description, the campaign name is also not displayed.

Tom

description <tab> “Fighting two fronts begins to impact the Axis forces as the Allies continue to advance towards Germany. Realizing that they must elminate a fighting front, the German High Command orders that the Axis forces pull from the Eastern front and focus their forces in a final counterstrike against the Allied forces. The upcomming battles could decide the outcome of the war.”

description <tab> “The Axis counterstrike was narrowly defeated, and the Axis powers have been forced to retreat all the way to the motherland. The Allies have taken advantage of the retreat, and are now begginning to attack the motherland from all sides in order to force a surrender, and it appears that the end is near. **The Axis Command ,however, will fight to the death to protect the motherland!”

I can’t tell you if this is right or not, its only a wild guess, but maybe the two asterixes (**) are somehow making the engine think it means something else?

It is my understanding that the ** tells it to start a new paragraph. I will test the removal of the ** and see if it changes anything.

Well, I’m not a campaign file guru or anything of those likes, so you could very well be right.

I tested removing the ** from the .campaign file.

It simply removed the paragraph break, and did not cause it to be seen in the right pane of the Campaign maps. Thanks for the idea though… at this point I am willing to try about anything.

One asterix starts a new paragraph (forces a new line), with two asterixes you force a new line 2 times, resulting in a blank line between the paragraphs.

Great to know… always have just used the **… although a bit useless overall as it doesn’t display the campaign description anyway.

Found the problem, thought I would post it in case someone else runs into it.

The first campaign that had issues was using a map that had two .bsp files, and I was apparently using the wrong name. By switching the map name to that of the second .bsp file the problem was solved and the campaign description showed up correctly.

The second campaign was failing due to a downloaded map (remagen_alpha1.pk3). By removing this map from the campaign rotation the campaign worked perfectly and the description showed up.

It appears that if the campaign description does not show up, or if you select a campaign and an unexpected campaign begins, that the problem is with one of your maps. I found out which ones by removing them one by one and testing.

Well, anyway hope this is useful to someone besides me.

Lesson learned: Never put an alpha into a campaign. :disgust:

Actually the map that was causing the biggest problem was a final version map… not an alpha.
More specifically it was normandy_final which includes the following .bsp files:

normandy.bsp
normandy_final.bsp

I originally just used the first .bsp file, but found that I needed to use the second in order to get it to work successfully.

The alpha map that was causing the second issue was placed there by me durring some trouble shooting testing.
Though you have a good point about using alpha maps… you never know what you are going to get.

ugh. As you’ve pointed out, you may never know what your getting with some of these mappers final releases! IMO, the actual bsp file should be named the same thing as the pk3 file. No one should have to open up a pk3 file to find out what name to use to run the map.
