Bye Bye SD !

[QUOTE=Jimmy James;371435]OK dude, I’m seriously giving you +1 rep for your attempt to use the English language but I truly have no idea what you are trying to say. (Sounds interesting however.)

Money frees humans from the barter system which allows you to do more esoteric, non-tangible work and still be able to feed yourself. Without money we’d either have to farm our own food or return to the bater system and trade goods for food. This prevents true specialization and one cannot embark on long term research since you need to continuosly create something to trade or starve to death.
The only sensible way to overcome the shortcomings of the barter system is with a monetary system. Become a valuable cog in society’s machine and enrich all our lives. We can all work together to better each other by doing our jobs.

… It must be the Security thing

hm, don’t want to rain on your parade, but I never said monetary system had to be left. Also, barter is not the only alternative to money. At last, I was more talking about stock exchange and how rumors can destroy companies (and more importantly the lives of their employees) in this dark place. Or how you can’t find a place to live in Paris while dozens of appartments sit empty because banks own them and keep them for speculation.

Anyway, it’s not the place for politics, so let’s stop here

ps: screw you security, the resistance will win and the corrupt elites will fall ! muahaha

I have ranted on and on about BRINK way beyond a fault but I can’t say “bye bye SD !”. I love them too much and you know you do too.

P.S. I too had 2 servers for BRINK and preordered multiple copies as prizes and for friends leading up to release. Lots of money I spent currently not in use :frowning:

=P I was just playing devil’s advocate. Besides, where would you be if we hadn’t let you build your house on the Ark? You’re free to unhook your boat and float off into the sunrise

(H0RSE) #106

No we wouldn’t. I have three words for you:

“Resource Based Economy.”

Also, money stifles progress - at least how it is used now. Need an example? We have the resources (food) available to feed starving people in other countries. We have the technological means to make vast strides in disease research an medicine, but since we don’t have the money, or rather, there is no profit to gain in these fields, they remain stagnant.

Problems in our monetary based society will only have a resolution if money can be made from solving those problems.

(Jimmy James) #107

Oh yeah, just ask Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. I’m sure they will agree that “money stifles progress”.

Sarcasmed!

somehow this seems far flung from what bomba started, but since he left, i dont mind wandering OT.

i think what Horse is getting at (or at least where i’m taking it) is pursuit of money doesnt always lead to progress…in the sense of progression. case in point. TB is a global disease that affects millions, and is incredibly cheap to treat, yet we (royally, really talking big pharma here) invest limited resources (on a per cap basis) b/c it simply is not profitable to develop TB Tx compared to (patented) Rx drugs that are targeted at the diseases of the more affluent (cancer, cholestrerol, “performance”, etc.). Not saying we shouldnt treat rare forms of cancer (we should), but profitability means these diseases get high per cap expenditures compared to something like TB…which is fine if you want to argue the harshest neoliberal forms of “market logics”…until MDR-TB rears its head, costs thousands-x to treat, and we wonder…now how did we let this get out of control?

/global health rant

edited to add: what is this “money” to which you refer…all i have is plastic cards in my wallet and bank passwords on my computer…

(AmishWarMachine) #109

I think it’s pretty safe to say that it is money (read: greed for it) that is the reason we’re still stuck on petroleum-based fuels.

(Or maybe I need to put my tinfoil cap back on?)

(thesuzukimethod) #110

re: fuels…/this\ + the inertia of an established energy/housing/commuting infrastructure

(dazman76) #111

Eeew, that abomination never deserved to wear the C64 badge! And I think the wiki page does a good job of explaining why it wasn’t really a console, due to the huge number of design cock-ups. I’m standing by my claims! lol

The other reason is that car companies won’t pull their heads out of their asses  They continue to invest heavily in fully electric cars, to bring us what? GBP £7000 worth of batteries that last < 10 years, <5 years if you regularly recharge before 50% used, £32000 for a small hatchback normally worth £12000 or less, so few charging points you can’t even drive around the country, and 8+ hour full charge times for a massive 100 miles of driving (if you’re lucky).

Hydrogen is the only way the car industry will progress - and they are still shying away from doing it. “zomg it can haz exploshun!!”. Pfft  Bunch of slackers.

(thesuzukimethod) #112

not to mention battery performance in temperature extremes (lots of prius’ down here in So AZ, but jury is still out on how long the batteries will last in our summer temps)…that + the need to (mostly) burn coal to get that electricity…

but my car is electric, so i can drive everywhere, right?

All I know is that I’m still giddy from playing with Amish and Suzuki last night.

Anyone else have problems using the Image button? I always get “URL Invalid”, since the site upgrade, and must apply the tags manually.

One issue.

The oil companies actually are doing the most work in alternative energy. I think Cheveron (Fail spell) is within the top 5. So really, the oil companies are preparing for a ban on mining oil.

Amazing how an offhand, tongue-in-cheek quote causes such a debate. The major problems in the world can be put down to overpopulation, conflicting social contracts in a globalized society and lack of a good work ethic / social integration ethic of young people nowadays.
That and gangsta rap.

Aaaaaand discuss!
